The man accused of carrying out the Christchurch mosque attacks last month will face 50 murder charges when he appears in court this week, New Zealand police said on Thursday.
Australian Brenton Tarrant was previously charged with one murder as a holding measure, but police said all the deaths and injuries in the 15 March attacks would be reflected in upgraded charges during his next appearance on Friday.
"The man arrested in relation to the Christchurch terror attacks will face 50 murder and 39 attempted murder charges when he appears in the High Court in Christchurch on Friday," they said in a statement.
Police said further charges were being considered against Tarrant – a self-avowed white supremacist – but did not specify what they were.
They could relate to whether the court deems the attack a terrorist act.

Deepak Talwar, an accused in money laundering case, withdrew his plea in which he claimed that his arrest since 30 January was illegal from the Delhi High Court.
Talwar's counsel sought to withdraw the habeas corpus petition while referring to a recent judgement of the Supreme Court.

Enforcement Directorate told a Delhi court today that Christian Michel, the alleged middleman arrested in the AgustaWestland VVIP Chopper scam, and other accused received 42 million euros as kickbacks in the deal.

Four women workers were injured, two of them critically, after a fire broke out at a fireworks factory in Durg district of Chhattisgarh on Thursday, police said.
The fire broke out around 11.30 am in a section of Praja Fireworks Factory in Mahmara village of the district, when the victims were working with explosive powders, City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Durg Vivek Shukla said.
The women workers, identified as Rahi Nishad (45), Ganeshwari Nishad (40), Surji Nishad (40) and Mati Nishad (36), sustained burn injuries in the incident, he said.

A man arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a seven-year old girl was thrashed by a section of public at a government hospital here when he was brought there for medical checkup on Thursday, police said.
Santhosh Kumar faced the fury of a group of people who rained blows on his face and neck as he was being escorted by police to a van after completion of the check-up.
Police managed to push him into the van and rushed out of the hospital premises.

India is a land where religious harmony has existed for ages and a few incidents of attack on minorities cannot become symbolic of the nation that it is, Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama said today.
Reacting to a question on attacks on the minority community in India, including the recent incident in Gurgaon where a mob of over 40 persons had recently pelted stones at the house of muslim family, the spiritual leader said there are always "a few mischievous people", but that does not mean it a symbol of that nation.
"A few incidents (of attack on minorities) cannot become symbolic of the nation that we are".

A 22-year-old inmate of the Nashik Central Jail, serving life sentence, gave the slip to police and fled from a court in Niphad today, an official said.
Srawan Suresh Pimpale had been taken to the court for a case when he managed to escape by pushing away the policemen escorting him, an official of the Niphad police station said.
A manhunt has been launched for him, the official added.

Facebook is working to prevent livestreams of terror attacks such as the one in New Zealand but it does not plan to introduce a delay on live feeds, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said.
Zuckerberg, in an interview with ABC's "Good Morning America" broadcast today, also said he had confidence in measures put in place by Facebook to prevent interference in next year's US presidential election.
Zuckerberg said a delay on livestreaming "might" have limited views of the Christchurch attacks, which were streamed on Facebook Live by the self-avowed white supremacist who carried them out.

The CBSE has issued show cause notices to school managements across the country after 3,500 teachers did not turn up for evaluation of board exam papers, while 15 disaffiliation notes have also been issued for repeated violations.
The Central Board of Secondary Education has written to the Directorate of Education recommending disciplinary action against schools for more than 200 government school teachers who did not turned up for evaluation, CBSE secretary Anurag Tripathi said Thursday.
He said private schools have been sent notices in some cases.

Saudi Arabia today reopened a consulate in Baghdad for the first time in nearly 30 years and announced a USD 1 billion aid package for Iraq, a sign of improving ties between the two neighbours whose relations have been uneasy for years.
The consulate, which will issue visas to Iraqis, was opened at a ceremony in Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, during which Iraq's Foreign Minister Mohamed Alhakim raised a green Saudi flag over the building.

Two labourers died and three sustained injuries after a wall of an aluminium factory collapsed in east Delhi's Shahdara on Thursday, police said.
According to the fire department, they received information regarding the incident in Seemapuri area at around 12 noon and four fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
The rescue operation was completed eight more than hours later at 8.15 pm, the officials said.

43 students of a government school here had to be hospitalised with symptoms of food poisoning after taking noon meal Thursday, police said.
However, the condition of all the children is stable.
A total of 54 students studying from class I to class III at the Sanarpalayam government elementary school took rice and eggs, and went back to their respective classes, the police said.
Shortly afterwards, 43 of them began vomitting in the classrooms and were taken to hospital, they said.
Consumption of rotten eggs and poor quality rice were the cause of the illness, the police said quoting doctors.
A police case has been registered.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly stealing an iPhone from a passenger at the Kirti Nagar metro station here, police said today.
The accused, Joginder, a resident of Aman Vihar, was nabbed Wednesday, they said.
Joginder used to keep a close watch on passengers at the platforms, choose his targets, follow them and pick their wallets, mobile phones and other valuables when he had the chance, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Mohammad Ali said.

Riots broke inside a high security central jail after rumours started floating that some inmates were being shifted out of the Kashmir valley.
The inmates burnt a temporary shelter and tried to come to the outer cordon of the jail located in the downtown area of the city.
Senior police officers and additional companies of the CRPF were rushed to the jail to bring the situation under control.

Two Army men were killed and five others suffered serious burn injuries in a fire at an army range in Madhya Pradesh Thursday, an official said.
The incident took place at the Army's Bercha Range at Mhow, a cantonment town near Indore.
"Two Army men were killed in the fire incident at the Army's Mhow-based Bercha Range and five others were seriously injured," defence PRO Colonel Aman Anand told PTI from New Delhi.
"They died while dousing flames," he said.
Asked about the cause of fire and other details, Anand said he will share the details later.
