Rupee Falls 12 Paise to Stand at 71.22 against the Dollar
The rupee on Tuesday depreciated 12 paise to 71.22 in early trade amid strengthening American currency and rising crude prices.
Forex traders said strengthening US dollar against some currencies overseas and lower opening of domestic equities weighed on the local unit.
However, fresh foreign fund inflows capped the losses for the domestic unit.

Income Tax Raid at 74 Places in Tamil Nadu
The Income Tax Department on Tuesday launched searches at 74 places in Tamil Nadu in connection with a tax evasion probe against some real estate groups and a retail store chain in the state, officials said.
They said the raids are being carried out in state capital Chennai and two places in Coimbatore against two realty groups and premises of retail chain Saravana stores.

Indonesia Flood, Landslide Death Toll Hits 70
Floods and landslides that battered Indonesia's Sulawesi island have killed at least 70 people, authorities said on Tuesday, as aerial footage underscored the scale of the disaster with whole villages wiped off the map.
Lashed by heavy rain, rivers swelled and burst their banks, inundating dozens of communities across 12 districts as well as parts of the provincial capital Makassar.
The bodies of 70 victims have been found, while six are still missing, Syamsibar, head of South Sulawesi's disaster mitigation agency said.

Piyush Goyal to Receive Carnot Prize for Power Reforms, Rural Electrification
Union Finance Minister Piyush Goyal will receive the Carnot prize for his contribution towards sustainable energy solutions, with a team from University of Pennsylvania coming here to felicitate him on 30 January, Wednesday.
The former power minister, who was to be awarded the prize by the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design in October last year, had to skip the event because of the Amritsar tragedy in which over 60 people died after being mowed down by a train.
The award recognises Goyal's tenure as minister of power in which he is credited to have "reformed" the electricity sector and extended access to electricity to 18,000 villages, as documented by the International Energy Agency.

Army Joins Rescue Ops to Track Trapped Miners in Meghalaya
The Indian Army has joined the multi-agency operations to search for the remaining 13 miners trapped inside a 370-foot-deep coal mine in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district, officials said today.
"The Indian Navy had requested the Army to assist in rescue operations by providing administrative support and it has now set up camps at the site," defence spokesperson Ratnakar Singh told PTI.
An Army team comprising about 20-25 members has been deployed to support the Navy, he said.

HC Refuses Permission to Terminate Woman's 26-Week-Old Pregnancy
The Calcutta High Court today refused permission to a woman to terminate her 26-week-old pregnancy on the ground of possible abnormality since the foetus has already developed most of its organs and that the mother's life is not at risk.
A medical board at the state-run SSKM Hospital has in a report to the court said the prognosis of the baby is likely to be better if it is delivered near term.

Two JMB Operatives Wanted in 2014 Burdwan Blast Case Held
Two Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) operatives, wanted in the 2014 Burdwan blast case, were arrested by the National Investigation Agency in West Bengal's Hooghly district, officials said today.
Kadar Kazi (32) and Sajjad Ali (21) were arrested on Monday night from a three-storeyed under-construction building in the Borodongol More locality under the district's Arambagh police station area, they said. "They were wanted in the Burdwan blast case. Kazi was also declared a proclaimed offender while Ali was his associate," an NIA official said.

CPCB Slaps Rs 1 Crore Fine Each on Northern Railways, NDMC
The Central Pollution Control Board has slapped a fine of Rs 1 crore each on the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and the Northern Railways over non-compliance of norms, according to a notice.
The CPCB said an environmental compensation of Rs 1 crore has to be paid by the two bodies — NDMC and Northern Railways — by January 31, failing which prosecution will be initiated in accordance with law, the notice issued recently said.
