The United States confirmed on Wednesday, 23 January, that it plans to seek the extradition of Chinese telecom giant Huawei's finance director, who was detained in Canada on a US request, before a January 30 deadline.
"We will continue to pursue the extradition of defendant Ms. Meng Wanzhou, and will meet all deadlines set by the US/Canada Extradition Treaty," said Justice Department spokesperson Marc Raimondi.

The dismembered body of a woman was found scattered in a field in outer Delhi's Alipur, police said on Tuesday, 22 January.
Police said some parts of the body were stuffed in a sack, while some other, including the severed head, were lying scattered in the isolated plot.
Prima facie, it seems the body of a woman, they said, adding that the remains have been sent for an autopsy.
Police said a passerby informed them about a sack lying in the plot around 6 pm on Monday. Personnel from the Alipur police station reached the spot and recovered the remains, Guarav Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer north), said.
There were injury marks on some body parts and police suspect that these have been mauled by stray dogs.

The number of people killed in a gas pipeline explosion in the Mexican state of Hidalgo last Friday increased to 93, the Minister of Health Jorge Alcocer said on Tuesday.
The number of the dead grew due to the severity of burns suffered by the individuals, Alcocer said at a press conference, which was also attended by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
Another 46 people remain hospitalised including one who is "very grave with a bad prognosis," the minister said, reports Xinhua news agency.

Three men and a teenage boy have been arrested and charged for an alleged plot against a small Islamic community in New York state, police said.
The suspects have been accused of possessing homemade bombs and firearms, and planning to attack Islamberg, founded by a Pakistani cleric in the 1980s.
The three men – Andrew Crysel, 18, Vincent Vetromile, 19, and Brian Colaneri, 20 – were due to appear in court on Wednesday.

The Supreme Court has ordered the release of four convicts in the 2002 Narodya Patiya riots case, reported News18.
A bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar granted bail to the four convicts on the grounds that the Gujarat High Court’s decision was ‘debatable’. In three bail order, the SC also said that there were doubts over the conviction.

Six persons, including a woman, were arrested for allegedly killing her husband in Jharkhand's Palamau district, police said on Wednesday.
The woman's husband, Amresh Oraon, a resident of Maknapur village under the jurisdiction of Manatu police station, had been missing from January 14.
Oraon's body was recovered by the police from the banks of Amanat river on the basis of a lead provided by his friend Raju Baitha, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Palamau, Indrajeet Mahatha, said.
Maknapur village is located near the river, the police officer said.

A pair of hand-raised rhinos, a male and female, have been translocated from Kaziranga National Park to Manas National Park in Assam.

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake shook the Eastern Nepal's Bhojpur and its adjoining Khotang districts late Tuesday, the country's seismological department said.

US President Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen has delayed congressional testimony citing "threats" from the president, reports AFP citing reports.
A gunman killed at least five people on Thursday, 24 January, at a bank in Sebring, Florida in the southern United States, police said.
"We have at least five victims, people who were senselessly murdered," Police Chief Karl Hoglund told a news conference.
The alleged shooter, identified as a 21-year-old resident of Sebring, has been taken into custody, Hoglund said.

Thirteen people have died during two days of unrest in Venezuela amid protests against President Nicolas Maduro, a Caracas-based rights group reported on Thursday, 24 January.
The deaths, mostly from gunshot wounds, were recorded in the capital and across the country, the Venezuelan Observatory of Social Conflict told AFP.
