Armed Group Kills More Than 30 in Central African Republic: UN

More than 30 people were killed and many more wounded when an armed group attacked villages in northwestern Central African Republic on Tuesday, the UN's peacekeeping mission (MINUSCA) said.

Michael Avenatti Charged With Defrauding Stormy Daniels

Michael Avenatti, the attorney who rocketed to fame through his representation of porn star Stormy Daniels in her battles with President Donald Trump, was charged Wednesday with ripping her off.

Federal prosecutors in New York City say Avenatti used a doctored document to divert about 300,000 dollars that Daniels was supposed to get from a book deal, then used the money for personal and business expenses. Only half of that money was paid back, prosecutors said.

Delhi, Meghalaya High Courts Get New Chief Justices

Justices Dhirubhai Naranbhai Patel and Ajay Kumar Mittal were on Thursday, 22 May, appointed chief justices of Delhi and Meghalaya high courts respectively.

While Justice Patel is currently posted at the Jharkhand High Court, Justice Mittal is with the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Justice Patel will be the chief justice of the Delhi High Court from 7 June and Justice Mittal will head the Meghalaya High Court from 28 May, separate notifications issued by the Law Ministry said on Thursday.

Sri Lanka President Sirisena Extends Emergency by Month

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Wednesday, 22 May, extended by a month the state of emergency imposed in the wake of the deadly Easter Sunday bombings that killed nearly 260 people.

The president issued a special gazette notification extending the state of emergency by a month, citing "public security".

The emergency law gives police and the military extensive powers to arrest, detain and interrogate suspects without court orders.

Sri Lanka initially imposed the emergency on 23 April to crack down on the nine suicide bombers who attacked three churches and as many luxury hotels 21 April, killing more than 258 people and injuring 500 others.

NSE Co-Location Scam: CBI Informs HC It Has Broadened Scope of Investigation

The CBI informed the Delhi High Court on Wednesday that it has broadened the scope of probe into the National Stock Exchange co-location scam and is looking into the aspect of criminality by public or private players in the misuse of NSE data.

The CBI's submission came in a status report filed on the scope of the investigation in the case.

NSE co-location facility allows stock brokers to take on rent specific racks and co-locate their servers and systems within the exchange premises.

Sterlite Expects to Reopen Tuticorin Plant in Next Few Months

Sterlite Copper on Wednesday expressed hope that it will resume operations in the next couple of months at its Tutocrin plant which was shut after 13 people died during protests a year ago.

On 22 May 2018, anti-Sterlite protests turned violent with the agitators fighting pitched battles with the police and 13 people were killed in police firing.

The first anniversary of the incident was observed in Tuticorin Wednesday, with scores of locals turning up to remember the victims.

"We are hopeful of starting the plant in next couple of months," Sterlite Copper CEO Pankaj Kumar told PTI over phone.

GSTN Releases Prototype of Simplified Return Filing System

GST Network on Wednesday released a demo tool for the new and simplified return filing form which will be launched sometime later in the year.

The prototype available on webportal https://demoofflinetool.gst.gov.in/instructions gives stakeholders a feel of what the new return filing system will look like. GSTN also sought stakeholder feedback on the proposed offline tool.

It will allow users to use functionality such as drop down menus, invoice upload, upload of purchase register for matching with system created inward supplies.

Spicejet Launches 20 New Domestic Flights

SpiceJet on Wednesday announced the launch of 20 new domestic flights, with 18 of them connecting the financial capital with a host of metro and non-metro cities.

The new services, which include flights to regional destinations such as Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayawada and Tirupati from Mumbai, will be launched between 26 and 30 May, SpiceJet said in a statement.

All new flights being introduced will be operated daily, except the one for Mumbai-Kolkata route which will be not be operational on Wednesday and Sunday, with Boeing 737 NG aircraft, the release said.

Pak Court Grants Interm Bail to Asif Zardari

The Islamabad High Court divisional bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhter Kiyani granted bail till 13 June to Asif Ali Zardari against Rs 200,000 surety bonds in a case related to alleged award of illegal contracts.

Zardari's counsel Farook H Naek told the court the National Accountability Bureau had summoned Zardari on 23 May in an inquiry related to award of allegedly illegal contracts to a private firm in Sindh, The Express Tribune reported.

HC Reserves Order on CBI Plea to Extend Probe Time in Asthana Bribery Case

The CBI on Wednesday told the Delhi High Court that it was asking for more time to complete the investigation in a bribery case involving the agency's former special director Rakesh Asthana so as to conduct the probe in a free, fair and transparent manner.

Justice Mukta Gupta, after hearing the submissions of the counsel for CBI, Asthana and two others, reserved the order on the application by the CBI seeking extension of time to complete the probe in the case lodged against Asthana, DSP Devender Kumar and middleman Manoj Prasad.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Vikramjit Banerjee, representing the CBI, said they were giving effect to the court's January order by which the agency was asked to complete the investigation in the case within 10 weeks.

A Pakistani court has allowed the country's anti-corruption watchdog to interrogate jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for allegedly using 20 bullet proof vehicles imported for the proposed SAARC summit in 2016 for himself and his family, according to a media report.

Accountability Court judge Muhammad Arshad passed the order on an application filed by the anti-graft body, seeking permission to interrogate the 69-year-old Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo at the Kot Lakhpat jail, where he is serving 7-year-sentence in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills graft case.

Western Nations Urge Swift Sudan Accord to Install Civil Rule

The United States, Britain and Norway called for a swift agreement between Sudanese protesters and generals on installing civilian rule, saying it would be harder for them to work with any other new authority.

Talks between protest leaders and army generals who seized power after ousting longtime leader Omar al-Bashir last month have stopped since late Monday following disagreement about who should lead a new ruling body - a civilian or a soldier.

The Western troika, which has previously been involved in mediation in Sudanese conflicts, said the country "urgently needs an agreement" to end the period of uncertainty, according to a joint statement released late Tuesday.

Govt Clears Names of 4 Judges for Elevation to Supreme Court: Sources

The government is learnt to have cleared the names of four judges for their elevation to the Supreme Court, sources said on Wednesday.

Once the appointments formally come through, the top court will have its full sanctioned strength of 31 judges (including the chief justice). As of now, the apex court is functioning with 27 judges.

The four names cleared by the government are justices Aniruddha Bose, AS Bopanna, BR Gavai and Surya Kant.

Air India to Start New Domestic and International Flights from Next Month

Air India on Wednesday announced that various new flights would begin from next month on domestic as well as international routes in order to meet passengers' heavy demand during the summer vacation.

The national carrier said it will offer additional 3,500 seats per week on Mumbai-Dubai-Mumbai route from 1 June.

Moreover, it will offer additional 3,500 seats per week on Delhi-Dubai-Delhi route too from 2 June by operating two new flights using its B787 Dreamliner aircraft.

"The airline will offer one way Economy class promotional fare of Rs 7777 (all inclusive) from both Delhi and Mumbai to Dubai for sale and travel up to 31 July 2019," Air India said in a statement.

Minor Girls from Jharkhand Raped by Four in Rajasthan

Two teenage girls from Jharkhand were allegedly raped by four persons, including two minor boys, for the last six months in Rajasthan's Bhilwara district, police said on Wednesday.

An FIR was registered in the matter by a child welfare committee in Bhopal on 18 May where the girls aged 15-16 years reached earlier this month after giving a slip to the accused.

The incident was reported at Raila police station of Bhilwara on Tuesday, DSP Himmat Singh said.

The accused are on the run, reported PTI, citing police.

Man Killed, Constable Injured in Muzaffarnagar Encounter

The police claimed on Wednesday to have gunned down a person, allegedly involved in two dozen cases of dacoity and murder, in an encounter in UP’s Muzaffarnagar.

According to the police, the encounter took place in Kotwali area on Tuesday night. During the exchange of fire, the accused, Ashu, was shot and a constable suffered injuries.

Ashu, wanted in several cases of dacoity and murder in Muzaffarnagar, Meerut and Baghpat districts, was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead, the police said.

Bandipora Rape Case: Charge Sheet Will Be Filed Soon, Says Police

The Jammu and Kashmir Police will "soon" file a charge sheet in the Bandipora rape case, officials said on Wednesday, 22 May.

Tahir Ahmad Mir was arrested for allegedly raping a three-year-old girl in north Kashmir's Bandipora district.

"Police will file the chargesheet in the competent court of law against the accused person soon," a police official said, adding that there is no truth in the suggestions that the medical examination of the girl had not established sexual assault.

Protesters Clash With Indonesian Police After Election Loss

Supporters of an unsuccessful presidential candidate clashed with security forces and set fire to a police dormitory and vehicles in the Indonesian capital on Wednesday after the release of official election results.
