Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull Survives Party Leadership Challenge

Embattled Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull survived a leadership challenge from within his own party as discontent with his rule boiled over less than a year before national elections.

Turnbull, considered a moderate, declared his position vacant at a Liberal party meeting to force the issue after rampant speculation that the more hardline Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton wanted his job, with the government consistently trailing the Labor opposition in opinion polls.

The disunity came to a head on Monday, 20 August, when Turnbull was forced to shelve plans to embed carbon emissions targets in law after a revolt by fellow Liberal politicians.

Party whip Nola Marino told reporters Dutton challenged but Turnbull won 48-35.

Union Min Tomar's PA Found Hanging, Probe Underway

A 31-year-old man working as a Personal Assistant to Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, allegedly committed suicide by hanging at 2:25 am on Monday, 20 August, in Laxmi Bai Nagar area, ANI reported.

The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem. ANI adds that an investigation is now underway.

A woman and two children were killed after the wall of a building in Bhopal’s Kamala Park area collapsed last night, ANI reported.

Police Recover Bodies of Five Members of Family From Allahabad Home

UP Police recovered bodies of a man, his wife and three daughters from a locked house in Allahabad last night, ANI reported.

The body of the man was found hanging, his wife's body was found inside the fridge. ANI added that the bodies of two daughters were found in a suitcase and an almirah, with the third daughter’s body found in a room.

Eight Police Personnel Suspended in Bihar

Eight police personnel, including the SHO (Station house officer), Bihiya, have been suspended in connection with an incident where a man was found dead in Bhojpur's Bihiya and a woman was allegedly stripped and thrashed on suspicions of being involved in the murder.

India, China Defence Ministers to Meet, Hold In-Depth Exchanges Today

Chinese Defence Minister Lt Gen Wei Fenghe is set to begin his four-day visit to New Delhi today, and hold a meeting with Indian Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in his first India visit after the Doklam standoff.

Gen Wei will have “in-depth exchanges” with his counterpart Nirmala Sitharaman during the visit, PTI reported.

Gen Wei's visit is regarded as a full-fledged bilateral visit aimed at solidifying military ties. This will be their second meeting this year as Sitharaman met him during her visit to Beijing in April to take part in the defence ministers' meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Vehicle Carrying Yatris Falls into Chenab River, Nearly a Dozen Feared Dead

A vehicle carrying yatris to Machail Mata rolled into the Chenab river 28 kilometres from Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir DGP SP Vaid said to ANI on 21 August. A five-year-old may be the lone survivor of the accident, with at least a dozen people feared dead, the DGP said to ANI.

Woman Run Over, Dragged to Death by SUV Driven by Fashion Student in Delhi

A 50-year-old woman was killed in Connaught Place after she was run over by an SUV being driven by a 20-year-old fashion student on Sunday night, Hindustan Times reported.

The driver of the SUV was arrested after she was stopped at a police picket nearly 300 metres from the scene of the accident. The victim was still underneath the vehicle when police stopped it, the report adds.

Lalu Prasad Yadav Hospitalised Due to "Failing Health"

A month after he underwent surgery, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav was admitted to the Asian Heart Institute in Mumbai due to “failing health” late Monday, 20 August, The Indian Express reported.

The RJD chief’s son and leader of the party, Tejashwi Yadav, said his father was being monitored “around-the-clock” and being provided continuous medical care” by a team of doctors, The Indian Express added.

The two women, hailing from Mumbai and currently studying in the US, had filed complaints last month with the Ponda police against the priest, accusing him of molesting them in the temple on separate occasions during their visit to the place in the last two months.

A security guard of Vijaya Bank in Defence Colony was taken into police custody after he allegedly opened fire in the bank premises, injuring a customer, reported ANI.

Govt Seeks Clarifications from Jet Airways Auditors on Deferring June Quarter Results

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) sought clarifications from the auditors of Jet Airways on the airline deferring announcement of its June quarter results, sources told PTI.

The board of crisis-hit Jet Airways, which was working on ways to reduce costs amid financial woes deferred the matter of consideration of the unaudited financial results for the June quarter.

Sources told PTI that the ministry was seeking clarifications from the auditors of Jet Airways on delay in announcement of results.

Goods and Services Tax Returns Date Extended

The last date of filing Goods and Services Tax Returns (GSTR) 3B has been extended to 24 August, for all states.

Due to flood situation in Kerala, the last date of filling GSTR 3B has been extended to 5th November in the state, Union Finance Minister Piyush Goyal told ANI.

Maharashtra Environment Minister Ramdas Kadam on Tuesday, 21 August, asked the Raigad district collector to demolish fugitive businessman Nirav Modi’s illegal bungalow in Alibaug, reported The Indian Express. The direction came at a review meeting in Raigad district regarding illegal bungalows that was chaired by Kadam.

In all, there are 121 illegal bungalows in Alibaug and 151 illegal bungalows in Murud. Some of these illegal bungalows belong to Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Smita Godrej, Madhukar Parekh and others.

Satya Pal Malik Appointed as New J&K Governor

Satya Pal Malik was appointed as the Governor of Jammu & Kashmir. He was earlier the Governor of Bihar, reported ANI.

Other governors of states who were appointed on 21 August were Ganga Prasad for Sikkim, Tathagata Roy for Meghalaya and Kaptan Singh Solanki for Tripura.

Satyadev Narayan Arya was appointed as the Governor of Haryana while Baby Rani Maurya was appointe as the Governor of Uttarakhand.

India, China Handling Differences with 'Sensitivity and Maturity'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India and China are handling their differences with "sensitivity and maturity" by not allowing them to become disputes and this was evident from peace in border areas.

Modi also termed India-China relations as a factor of stability in the world and appreciated the increased momentum of high-level contacts between the two countries across all spheres, including in areas of defence and military exchanges.

He made these remarks when State Councillor and Defence Minister of China General Wei Fenghe called on him here today, according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.

Lawyers for Donald Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, were pursuing negotiations with prosecutors that could result in a plea deal and a court hearing was set for Tuesday afternoon, according to two people familiar with the financial fraud investigation.
