Embattled Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull survived a leadership challenge from within his own party as discontent with his rule boiled over less than a year before national elections.
Turnbull, considered a moderate, declared his position vacant at a Liberal party meeting to force the issue after rampant speculation that the more hardline Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton wanted his job, with the government consistently trailing the Labor opposition in opinion polls.
The disunity came to a head on Monday, 20 August, when Turnbull was forced to shelve plans to embed carbon emissions targets in law after a revolt by fellow Liberal politicians.
Party whip Nola Marino told reporters Dutton challenged but Turnbull won 48-35.
A 31-year-old man working as a Personal Assistant to Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar, allegedly committed suicide by hanging at 2:25 am on Monday, 20 August, in Laxmi Bai Nagar area, ANI reported.

A vehicle carrying yatris to Machail Mata rolled into the Chenab river 28 kilometres from Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir DGP SP Vaid said to ANI on 21 August. A five-year-old may be the lone survivor of the accident, with at least a dozen people feared dead, the DGP said to ANI.
A 50-year-old woman was killed in Connaught Place after she was run over by an SUV being driven by a 20-year-old fashion student on Sunday night, Hindustan Times reported.
The driver of the SUV was arrested after she was stopped at a police picket nearly 300 metres from the scene of the accident. The victim was still underneath the vehicle when police stopped it, the report adds.

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) sought clarifications from the auditors of Jet Airways on the airline deferring announcement of its June quarter results, sources told PTI.

Lawyers for Donald Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, were pursuing negotiations with prosecutors that could result in a plea deal and a court hearing was set for Tuesday afternoon, according to two people familiar with the financial fraud investigation.
If a deal is struck, Cohen would plead guilty in federal court in Manhattan and agree to cooperate with the government, said the people, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to publicly discuss the case.
