Hamza Bin Laden Was Very Threatening To US: Trump
Al-Qaeda's Hamza bin Laden was very threatening to the US, President Donald Trump said on Thursday, 1 August, as he refrained from making any comment on news reports about the death of the son of Osama bin Laden.
"I can't comment about that. But he was very threatening to our country. He was saying very bad things about our country," Trump told reporters at the White House when asked if the US had any role in the death of Hamza bin Laden.

US Considering Blockade of Venezuela, Says Trump
The United States is considering a blockade of Venezuela, where the "authoritarian regime" is being helped by countries like Russia, China and Iran, Trump said on Thursday, 1 August.
"Yes, I am," Trump told reporters when asked if he was considering a blockade or quarantine of Venezuela, given the amount of foreign involvement from Russia, China, and Iran.
"Yes, I am. Yes. Yes, I am," Trump reiterated in a follow up question, without explaining any further.

Encounter Underway in J&K’s Shopian
An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, 2 August, police said.
Acting on a tip off about the presence of militants in Pandushan area of south Kashmir's Shopian district, security forces launched a cordon and search operation there during the night, a police official said.
He said as the forces were conducting searches of the area, militants fired upon them.
The forces retaliated, ensuing an encounter, the official said. No casualties reported.

Crack Down on Industrial Units Polluting Ganga: CPCB to 4 States
Taking strict note of effluent and industrial waste being discharged into the Ganga river, the CPCB has directed four state pollution control boards to take action on units, including closing them, if they don't comply with environmental norms.
In separate letters to the chairmen of the Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar pollution control boards, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has directed them to process reports of inspections within 15 days.

Sri Lankan Lawmaker Moves to Abolish Death Penalty
A Sri Lankan lawmaker has submitted a bill to abolish the death penalty while the president has sanctioned the hanging of four drug convicts.
Lawmaker Bandula Lal Bandarigoda said Friday the bill seeks to abolish the death sentence for the future and commute the sentences of those who are already on death row to life imprisonment.
The bill seems to be a move by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to stop the planned executions, which are now stayed by the courts.

A landmark arms control treaty that President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev signed three decades ago is dead, prompting fears of a new global arms race.
The United States and Russia both walked away from the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces treaty on Friday. If they choose not to extend or replace the larger New START treaty when it expires in early 2021, there will be no legally binding limits on the world's two largest nuclear arsenals for the first time in nearly a half century.

China Threatens Countermeasures If Trump Hikes Tariffs
China’s government has threatened unspecified “necessary countermeasures” if Trump’s planned tariff hike goes ahead.
The Commerce Ministry said Trump’s announcement is a violation of his agreement with President Xi Jinping in June to revive negotiations aimed at ending their fight over Beijing’s trade surplus and technology ambitions.
The ministry said if the U.S. measures took effect, “China will have to take necessary countermeasures to resolutely defend its core interests.”

Coffee Day Shares Hit Another Lower Circuit; Tank over 48% in 4 Days
Coffee Day Enterprises stock plunged over 48 percent in four days to hit its fresh lower circuit limit as wary investors took to selling amid slew of negative news aswirl about the company.
In four days of heavy selling, when shares of the company have tanked over 48 percent, its market valuation has been eroded by Rs 1,956.6 crore to Rs 2,110.40 crore on the BSE.
On Friday, the scrip plummeted 9.96 percent to a fresh 52-week low as well as lower circuit of Rs 99.90 on the BSE.
At the NSE, it cracked 10 percent to its lower circuit limit and one-year low of Rs 99.45.

An earthquake of magnitude 7 struck off Indonesia’s island of Sumatra on Friday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The Indonesian geophysics agency issued a tsunami warning after the quake, which the USGS said had hit at a depth of 59 km (37 miles), about 227 km (141 miles) from the city of Teluk Betung on the island.

Plea in HC to Postpone Release of Film on Batla House Encounter
An accused in the Batla House encounter case moved the Delhi High Court on Friday to postpone the release of a film made on the incident, saying it would adversely affect his trial which is going on in a lower court.
The petition came up for hearing before Justice Vibhu Bakhru, who ordered a special screening in the high court on Monday to ascertain whether the film titled "Batla House" and starring John Abraham would in any manner affect the trial of accused Ariz Khan, also known as Junaid.
Apart from him, Shahzad Ahmed, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the case and who has challenged the verdict in the high court, is also a petitioner in the matter.

Al-Qaeda gunmen killed 19 soldiers in an attack on an army base in southern Yemen on Friday, security officials said, a day after deadly assaults by rebels and a jihadist bomber.
The gunmen stormed Al-Mahfad base in Abyan province and remained inside for several hours before military reinforcements came, three security officials told news agency AFP, adding that the soldiers were killed in clashes with the jihadists.
