America's 1st Female Astronaut Candidate, Jerrie Cobb, Dies

America’s first female astronaut candidate, pilot Jerrie Cobb, who pushed for equality in space but never reached its heights, has died.

Cobb died in Florida at age 88 on 18 March following a brief illness. News of her death came Thursday from journalist Miles O’Brien, serving as a family spokesman.

In 1961, Cobb became the first woman to pass astronaut testing. Altogether, 13 women passed the arduous physical testing and became known as the 13 Mercury.

Malian PM Resigns Over Surge of Violence

Mali’s prime minister offered his resignation on Thursday, 18 April, following a motion of no confidence in his government over its handling of violence in the centre of the country, according to the presidency.

A statement from President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita’s office said he had accepted Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga's resignation, which comes after months of protests over the wave of violence.

UN Begins Evacuating Refugees From Libya to Niger

The UN said Friday it had evacuated 163 refugees from war-ravaged Libya to neighbouring Niger, but more than 3,000 others were still trapped in detention centres affected by clashes.

The move marked the first evacuation of refugees and migrants out of Libya since fighting escalated in Tripoli two weeks ago, the UN refugee agency said.

13 Killed as Church Roof Collapses in South Africa

The roof of a church collapsed during mass near the eastern South African city of Durban, killing 13 people and injuring at least 16, officials said Friday.

The accident happened on Thursday evening in the town of Dlangubo, north of Durban, after heavy rains.

AIIMS Doctors Threaten to Stop Work

AIIMS resident doctors have threatened to stop work if the administration does not act on rising cases of theft on the campus, saying patient care cannot be delivered in an unsafe and uncooperative environment.

The doctors have also alleged lack of redressal of complaints.

Air India May Lease 5 Boeing Aircrafts from Jet Airways

Air India chairman Ashwani Lohani is likely to meet State Bank chairman Rajnish Kumar Friday over the national carrier's plans to lease five wide-body Boeing planes from the now grounded Jet Airways.

The SBI-led consortium of lenders are now running the airline under a debt recast plan.

The Air India chairman had written to SBI chief Wednesday expressing interest in taking on lease five of the Boeing 777s from Jet and deploy them in key international routes. And the meeting, expected to take place in New Delhi, is in furthering this.

Mueller Report Shows 'No Reasonable Proof' of Russian Meddling: Kremlin

Russia on Friday, 19 April, once more dismissed the Mueller report, saying that it failed to present evidence of any meddling by Moscow in the 2016 US election.

"As a whole, the report as before does not present any reasonable proof at all that Russia allegedly meddled in the electoral process in the US," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists, saying it contained "no new information".

Spicejet Hires 500 Jet Airways Employees, Including 100 Pilots

Budget carrier SpiceJet on Friday, 19 April, said it has already absorbed over 500 employees, including 100 pilots, of the grounded carrier Jet Airways and it is open to induct more as it adds more aircraft and routes in the times ahead.

The Gurugram-based no-frills airline has already announced induction of 27 more planes -22 Boeing 737s and five turboprop Bombardier Q400s - in the fleet to help overcome to an extent the capacity deficit due to Jet Airways temporarily withdrawing its domestic and international services.

PIL Filed Against Cong's 'NYAY' Scheme

A PIL was filed in Allahabad High Court against the 'NYAY' scheme mentioned in Congress’ manifesto on Friday, 19 April. The court has issued a notice to the national party, seeking a reply within 10 days, as per ANI.

The next date of the hearing has been scheduled for 13 May.
