An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale hit the Nicobar Islands region on 17 January, National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.
There was no tsunami alert issued as sea levels around the Andaman Nicobar archipelago showed no major rise, said INCOIS Director SPS Shenoi.
The earthquake hit the region at 8:43 am and its epicentre was Nicobar Islands region. There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property, officials said.

Indian equity benchmarks opened higher in Thursday’s trade. The S&P BSE Sensex Index rose as much as 0.41 percent to 36,468.42 and the NSE Nifty 50 Index rose as much as 0.36 percent to 10,929.25.
