The Goa government has converted the old sub-jail in Mapusa town near here into a detention centre for foreign nationals who violate visa norms, a senior police official said Wednesday.

429 Tigers Killed by Poachers Since 2008, Reveals RTI Reply
As many as 429 tigers have been poached and killed since 2008 across the country, with the maximum of 71 in Madhya Pradesh during the period, revealed data obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
Year-wise, the maximum killings took place in 2011 when 80 tigers were poached, while the minimum of 17 occurred in 2015, according to the data from the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB), under the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

Indra Nooyi is among the candidates being considered by the White House to head the World Bank after the India-born former PepsiCo CEO's name was floated by Ivanka Trump, the president's influential daughter, a top American daily reported.

Over three lakh new voters were added during the ongoing special summary revision (SSR) in Jammu and Kashmir, election authorities said Wednesday.
"During the ongoing SSR of photo electoral rolls, with respect to January 1 as the qualifying date, 3,07,984 new voters were added, which is highest as compared to the last four years additions," the officials said. Besides, they said, 1,25,931 voters were deleted from the roll and 94,659 corrections and modifications were made in the particulars of electors.

Centre Working on Law to End Mining Crisis in Goa: Sawaikar
BJP Lok Sabha member from Goa Narendra Sawaikar on Wednesday said the Centre was in the process of formulating a law to resolve the state's mining crisis.
Sawaikar, another Lok Sabha MP from Goa Shripad Naik, Rajya Sabha member Vinay Tendulkar and Goa Mining People's Front chief Puti Gaonkar had met BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi on Sunday to find a solution for the resumption of the iron ore extraction operations in the state.

Sensex, Nifty Close Nearly Flat; Jet Airways Slumps
Indian shares closed little changed on Wednesday as investors were cautious ahead of Reliance Industries Ltd’s quarterly results.
The benchmark BSE Sensex closed 0.01 percent higher at 36,321.29, while the broader NSE Nifty ended up 0.03 percent at 10,890.30.
Shares of Reliance Industries climbed 0.55 percent. The conglomerate is due to report its quarterly results on Thursday.

DRI Seizes Rs 6.8 Cr Worth Gold Smuggled into India from Dubai, Sri Lanka
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has arrested four people for allegedly trying to smuggle gold valuing about Rs 6.88 crore into the country from Dubai and Sri Lanka, according to an official statement issued Wednesday.
All the four accused -- the kingpin, his aide and close relative, and two carriers -- have been remanded in judicial custody, it said.

Over 2,300 Muslim women from India will go on Haj this year without 'Mehram' or male companion as all those who applied under this category have been exempted from the lottery system, Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said Wednesday.
The Modi government had last year allowed women going to Haj without Mehram, which had resulted in about 1,300 Muslim women going for the pilgrimage without any male companion. They had been exempted from the lottery system.

A 5-year-old boy died after being thrashed by his step-father, in Delhi’s Kapashera, on 10 Januaru. DCP South West says, "We've registered a murder case. According to the medical report, the child suffered multiple injuries including, one on head which was the cause of the death."
DCP South West says, "On 12 Jan, the child died due to injuries. The step-father has confessed to beating the child. The mother presented wrong facts during the investigation. We've concluded that death is a result of a conspiracy of which the mother was also a part."
