1. Hindu Trust Offers Space for Namaz

For the past 24 years, a Hindu trust in Kankaria area of Ahmedabad has been offering a space of worship to Muslim devotees on Eid-ul-Fitr.

Hundreds of devotees usually visit the Idgah mosque that opens just twice a year — during Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha (Bakrid). Many of them will be left with no space within the premises and offer namaz on the streets. The Shri Sorathiya Brahmakshatriya Trust has been offering their marriage hall for them on these days.

Owned by the Gujarati Brahmin community, the trust managers claim that their gates are always open for their Muslim brothers.

2. Developed Nations Behind Green Woes: Chief Minister Vijay Rupani

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Wednesday, 5 June, affirmed the commitment to a cleaner environment said that blatant exploitation of natural resources by developed countries is the root cause of environmental problems faced by the world today.

Rupani was attending the launch of environment-friendly initiatives by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) at Tagore Hall. This included the launch of a drive to fill the Sabarmati river with treated sewage water, plant a million trees in the city and flagging of Joint Enforcement Teams (JET) of police and municipal staff to crack down on traffic violators, and violators of fire safety, construction or other laws.

3. Dalits Demand Panel to Probe Corruption in Panchayat After Murder of RTI Activist, Son

Two weeks after a Dalit teen was allegedly clubbed to death by a group of upper-caste Kshatriya men, the community in Manekvada village of Kotda Sanagani taluka in Rajkot district on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to the mamlatdar, demanding strictest punishment to the accused and a committee to look into the allegations of corruption in the panchayat.

The Dalit delegation was led by Meghabhai Sondarva, grandfather of Rajesh (19) who was allegedly murdered on 22 May.

“Through this memorandum, we demand that those accused of murdering Nanjibhai and his son be given the strictest punishments. The accused are the same persons who are indulging in corruption and spreading terror in the village. Therefore, through your office, we convey to the state government that they should not be released on bail either,” the Dalits stated in the memorandum.

4. Experts Seek Action Plan to Fight Pollution

It is not just imperative to make industry follow norms to reduce pollution, strategies need to be devised to ensure proper compliance said experts at a function as part of the World Environment Day celebration in the city.

The event, that was attended by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani saw the launch of the first Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) for Particulate Matter (PM 2.5 & PM 10). The scheme will involve setting of permits by the state, which allows a certain amount of pollution by industrial clusters.

Units within these clusters that emit less than their quota will be able to sell the extra limit to others in the unit who have failed to reduce their emission.

5. App-Based System: Teachers in Gujarat Colleges to Be Monitored

After government schools, the Gujarat education department is set to monitor its government college teachers on real time basis using a web-based technology that will keep a tab on their daily activities during the time they spend in the college.

The system was tested on pilot basis in five colleges under KK Shastri Education Campus in Maninagar, including the Government MCA College, Government Arts College, Government Commerce College, Government Science College and Government Law College.

Gujarat Education Minister Bhupendr-asinh Chudasama will launch the system on Thursday in all 109 government colleges and another 47 technical and polytechnical institutes across the state at the inauguration of a two-day Student Start-up and Innovation Policy (SSIP) annual conference.
