According to preliminary reports, the PWD seems to be responsible for the collapse of the Majerhat Bridge, said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in a press conference on 14 September.

After extensive meetings with various departments, the Chief Secretary has pointed out two things. First that the PWD was responsible. A lot of people have wasted time in transferring files, instead a precaution should have been taken at that time. All legal steps will be taken against those responsible. The police has been given responsibility for that.

The chief minister also said that the role of the Joka metro construction, that was ongoing adjacent to the bridge, could also not be ruled out as per the report. She added that further investigation needs to be done in the matter.

As of now, the bridge will be completely broken down and then reconstructed within a year.

On 4 September, a portion of the Majerhat Bridge in South Kolkata had collapsed, killing three and injuring at least twenty others.
