1. Adhir Maity Murder: Former Trinamool Councillor Gets Life Term

A judicial magistrate court on Monday sentenced Shambhunath Kow — the prime suspect in the murder case of Adhir Maity and a member of Trinamool Congress’ ward 58 committee — to life imprisonment. Six others were also awarded life sentence by the judge.

The ninth judicial magistrate at the Alipore court, Sujay Sengupta, had earlier pronounced the seven accused as guilty. Former councillor Kow’s lawyer Arindam Das said that they would move the higher court against the judgment.

2. 13 Children Hurt as Ride Overturns; Government Shuts Down Eco Park

As many as 13 children and an attendant at a jumping balloon joy ride were injured when the ride overturned, at Eco Park in Rajarhat, leading the state government to shut down the amusement park and appoint a two-member panel to probe its safety measures. The ride had overturned due to an 85 kmph wind which swept over the city on Sunday, sources said. Workers at the amusement park said a gust of wind snapped the nylon ropes which tethered the balloon to the ground.

Three people were critically injured when a blaze fuelled by inflammable adhesives swept through a glue manufacturing unit-cum-godown located opposite Welland Gouldsmith School on BB Ganguly Street on Monday morning. A fourth person who was stuck on the first floor escaped unhurt when locals rescued him with the help of a ladder.

5. Panchayat Elections in May, Nominations to Be Filed Till 9 April

The West Bengal State Election Commission (WBSEC) on Monday issued the notification for panchayat polls to be held in three phases on 1, 3 and 5 May.

With this, the model code of conduct (MCC) came into force across 20 districts on Monday and filing of nomination papers began. It will continue till 9 April.

6. Muslim Youth Refurbishes Hanuman Temple in Bengal

A small Muslim trader has refurbished a Hanuman temple at a village in Bengal’s Purulia district even as pockets in the state rocked by communal clashes are struggling to return to normalcy.

The renovated temple was inaugurated on Saturday, the day of Hanuman Jayanti. It is located in ward 21 of Purulia town.

Mohammad Pappu, a trader in the Karpur Bagan area, used money he saved over the years to repair the temple which also got a fresh coat of paint.

When Mahesh Mondal went to Karbala Maidan, a vast field with intermittent patches of green separating slums of Hindus and Muslims in the heart of Raniganj, to answer the call of nature on March 26, he hardly knew his end was near.

A Ram Navami procession organised by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) passing through Shaldanga-Vikashnagar area where Mondal lived, moved though the field and some people in the procession allegedly raised slogans threatening Muslims which immediately triggered a violent backlash.
