The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Friday, 16 August, the petitions posing legal challenges to the Centre's decision to scrap provisions of Article 370 which abrogated special status to Jammu and Kashmir and subsequent measures putting restrictions on the working of media in the region.
Later in the day, the UN Security Council is scheduled to hold a closed-door meeting to discuss the Kashmir issue.

Parliament Effectively Revokes Article 370
The Parliament had earlier this week given its nod to the legislation bifurcating the state, a bold decision that seeks to redraw the map and future of a region at the centre of a protracted militancy movement.
Three days after the far-reaching decision to abrogate the special status given to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 , Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a nearly 40-minute televised address to the nation on Thursday, 8 August, sought to assuage concerns of the people saying Jammu and Kashmir will not remain a Union Territory for long.
"As Jammu and Kashmir will see more and more development, I do not think it will remain Union Territory for long. Ladakh will remain a Union Territory," Modi said.
President Ram Nath Kovind Gives Assent to Reorganisation of J&K
President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday gave his nod to the legislation for bifurcation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh – will come into existence on 31 October.
The President has given assent to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, a home ministry official said.
"In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (a) of section 2 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 (34 of 2019), the Central Government hereby appoints the 31st day of October, 2019, as the appointed day for the purposes of the said Act," a home ministry notification said.
The UT of Jammu and Kashmir will have a Lieutenant Governor and the maximum strength of its assembly will be 107, which will be enhanced to 114 after a delimitation exercise. Twenty-four seats of the Assembly will continue to remain vacant as they fall under Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The current effective strength of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly is 87, including four seats falling in Ladakh region, which will now be a separate UT without a legislature.
Pak Cabinet Approves Its Govt's Measures Against India on Kashmir
Pakistan's Cabinet on Friday, 9 August, officially approved a slew of measures, including downgrading of diplomatic relations and snapping of trade ties, taken by its government in response to India's decision to revoke Article 370 and bifurcate the State of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.
Prime Minister Imran Khan chaired the meeting of the Cabinet which discussed the situation in Kashmir.
"Those measures among others include snapping the trade ties and downgrading the diplomatic relations," she said.
Pakistan also announced that it will suspend the Thar Express train service with India which links the two countries across the Rajasthan border, a day after it stopped the Samjhauta Express.
The government has also banned the screening of Indian films in the country's cinemas.
Schools in Jammu Reopened From Today
Schools in Jammu reopened on 10 August, and will stay open, ANI reported. This happened a day after Section 144, prohibiting the assembly of groups of four or more people, was lifted in the area.
Over 20 People Injured, Many Feared Blinded By Pellet Guns in Srinagar: Reports
Amid reports of section 144 being lifted in Jammu, more reports have of civilians injured by pellet guns, many feared blinded, have emerged from Srinagar.
The Wire and HuffPost reported that Srinagar’s SMHS hospital has been receiving a steady stream of civilians with pellet gun injuries. Many civilians have lost eyesight in one eye, and in some cases both eyes, the reports said.
The reports also quoted anonymous officials as stating that despite the majoritarian media’s representation of Kashmir being peaceful, sporadic protests have been reported from parts.
Russia Backs India's Stance on J&K, Urges Normalization of Relations Between India and Pakistan
ANI reported that the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry has urged a normalization of relations between India and Pakistan through bilateral talks.
“Russia is a consistent supporter of normalization of relations between India and Pakistan.We hope that the differences between them will be resolved by political and diplomatic means on a bilateral basis,” the statement concluded.

Pakistan Suspends Dosti Bus Service
After suspending two cross-border train services, Pakistan has announced to suspend the Lahore-Delhi friendship bus service, in the wake of India's moves on Kashmir, IANS reported.
Federal Minister for Postal Services and Communications Murad Saeed said on Friday, 9 August, that in line with the decisions of the National Security Committee (NSC), the government has suspended the Dosti (friendship) bus service between Lahore and New Delhi.
Nearly a Dozen Terror Camps Reactivated in PoK: Report
As tension between India and Pakistan escalates over scrapping of special status to Jammu and Kashmir, Islamabad has hastily reactivated nearly a dozen terror camps in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) and close to the International Border along Jammu and Kashmir, IANS reported.
During the past week, hectic movement of terrorists has been seen around these camps which were almost shut in the wake of May 2019 deadline set up by Financial Action Task Force (FATF), an inter-governmental body based in Paris.
Top intelligence sources said Indian security forces have been put on high alert as terror camps in Kotli, Rawalkot, Bagh and Muzzafrabad in PoK area, bordering Line of Control (LoC), have been reactivated with the ostensible backing of Pakistan army.
Two days back, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had stated in the joint session of Parliament that Islamabad would not be responsible if Pulwama type (or even bigger) terror attack is executed in India.
Pakistan Formally Suspends Trade Relations With India
Pakistan has formally suspended its trade relations with India, in retaliation against New Delhi's decision to revoke Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
On Friday, 9 August, the federal cabinet headed by Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan endorsed the decisions taken by the National Security Committee and the joint session of parliament, which include suspension of trade ties with India, reports Dawn news.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Firdous Ashiq Awan, replying to a question at a media briefing, said that Pakistan had also suspended import of Indian goods under the Pakistan-Afghanistan transit treaty.
As per notification SRO928 of 2019, all kind of exports to India have been suspended by amending the Export Policy Order 2016.
Through the other notification - SRO927 - by amending the Import Policy Order 2016, the government has banned import of goods of Indian origin or those imported from it. Earlier, this ban was only limited to imports from Israel.
Petition in SC Against Revocation of Article 370
A Kashmiri lawyer has moved the Supreme Court challenging the Presidential order that revoked Article 370, which granted a special status to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
Advocate Shakir Shabir in his petition claims that the Presidential Order which resulted in the revocation of J&K's special status, could not have been amended without the concurrence of the state Assembly and was ultra vires the Constitution.
The plea contended that the approval of the state Assembly reflected the will of the people, which was required before effecting such sweeping changes that altered the history and geography of J&K.
Pakistan Calls Bahrain Over Kashmir
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday called up Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and talked to him about India's moves on Kashmir.
During the call, Imran Khan strongly condemned the abrogation of special status of Jammu Kashmir. He accused India of violating the UN resolution and said that Islamabad rejects the decision of India altogether.
He also asserted that the global community should play a role in preventing India from taking "irresponsible actions", and that Kashmir is a globally recognised disputed area and its status cannot be changed by any unilateral decision of India, Pakistani media reported.
King Hamad said that Bahrain is closely analysing the situation in Kashmir and added that all issues will be resolved through negotiations.
China to Back Pakistan at UNSC: Pak Foreign Minister
China intends to support Pakistan in the UN Security Council (UNSC) over the Kashmir issue, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said on Friday after meeting with his counterpart Wang Yi and other senior officials.
Qureshi, who arrived in the Chinese capital early Friday to hold consultations in the wake of India revoking special status of Jammu and Kashmir, apprised officials in Beijing about Pakistan's concerns and reservations.
In an "urgent visit to the ally nation", Qureshi met with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, and informed the latter of India's "illegal move". The two held talks for two and a half hours, Pakistani media reported.
Addressing the media following his meeting with Wang, Qureshi said Pakistan had decided to go to the UNSC over India's "shocking move" and that Beijing would fully support Islamabad.
Omar Abdullah's National Conference Challenges Govt's J&K Move in SC: Report
The National Conference on Saturday moved the Supreme Court, challenging the Presidential Order on Article 370 that revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special status.
The petition filed by NC leaders Mohammad Akbar Lone and Hasnain Masoodi sought a direction from the apex court to declare the Presidential Order relating to Article 370 as "unconstitutional, void and inoperative" in Jammu and Kashmir.
The NC also sought to declare the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 as "unconstitutional".

Editor's Guild Expresses Concern over Shutdown in Kashmir
The Editors Guild of India on Saturday, 10 August expressed deep concern over the continued shutdown in communication links with the Kashmir Valley and the consequent curtailment of the media’s freedom and ability to report fairly and accurately on current developments.
“While some visiting journalists may be able to file their reports once they are out of the Valley, the lockdown is almost total and draconian for the vibrant local media that are the first eyes and ears on the ground,” the statement by the Guild said.
“It (the government) owes it to the people of India, including all in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, to allow the press, a vital institution of democracy, to function freely,” the statement said.
“The Guild underlines the imprudence in creating an unfair distinction in the treatment: for access, curfew passes, communication between local journalists and those coming in to report from outside. All journalists and all Indian citizens are entitled to equal freedoms,” it added.
Kashmir Times Editor Moves SC
A petition was on filed on Saturday by an editor of a prominent daily from Jammu and Kashmir in the Supreme Court seeking removal of restrictions imposed on working of journalists in J-K after scrapping of provisions of Article 370.
Anuradha Bhasin, Executive Editor of Kashmir Times, has sought directions for restoration of all modes of communication to enable the media to function in Jammu and Kashmir.
The editor in the petition said she is seeking a direction for the Centre and the administration of Jammu and Kashmir to immediately relax all restrictions on freedom of movement of journalists and media personnel in Kashmir and some districts of Jammu.

Passengers Struggle to Reach Their Families from Srinagar Airport
As people fly back to Kashmir in time for Eid-ul-Azha, reaching home from the airport is a struggle of its own.
Passengers at the Srinagar International Airport were seen on Sunday desperately searching for taxis even as they remained apprehensive about their journey ahead in the valley which was under restrictions with communication lines snapped since August 5.
While some buses were on standby, they were only ferrying passengers to the tourist reception centre at Dalgate.
Some people tried to negotiate and request the taxi drivers, but they refused to go to areas like Civil Lines area at Lal Chowk, located 14 km from the airport, and downtown city, complaining that on their return journey they were detained or harassed by security forces.

Delhi-Lahore Bus Service Cancelled: DTC
DTC on Monday cancelled the Delhi-Lahore bus service as Pakistan has decided to discontinue it in the wake of India revoking Jammu and Kashmir's special status, said a senior official of the public transporter.
On Saturday, a senior Pakistani minister has announced to suspend the friendship bus service from Monday.
A Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus was scheduled to leave for Lahore on Monday 6 AM. However, it did not leave due to the Pakistan's decision to suspend the bus service, the official said.
CRPF's Kashmir 'Madadgaar' Helpline 14411 Active Again
The Srinagar-based CRPF helpline – 14411 – has been re-activated for people, especially Kashmiris, who require help for their families or are in distress post the decision to revoke provisions of Article 370, officials said on Monday.
They said the standard five-digit landline number of the 'madadgaar' helpline has been restored after it went inactive due to the communication clampdown in the Kashmir Valley.
Over 500 calls have been received on the helpline number since late Sunday, they said.
Pak FM Qureshi Asks Political Parties in the Country to be United on Kashmir Issue
Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Monday asked Opposition parties to come together on Kashmir, saying the country should have a united stand on the issue.
Addressing the media in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) where he celebrated Eid al-Adha and visited a refugee camp, Qureshi said the entire "Pakistani nation and political leadership is united on the issue of Kashmir and one voice will be sounded on 14 August in support of Kashmiris."
Pakistan has announced that it will observe 14 August as 'Kashmir Solidarity Day' and 15 August as 'Black Day' after India scrapped Article 370 of the Constitution and bifurcated J&K into two Union territories.
Qureshi said that Prime Minister Imran Khan would visit PoK on 14 August and also address its legislative Assembly.
Barring Stray Protests, Eid-al-Adha Prayers Peaceful in J&K: Authorities
Barring stray protests, Eid-al-Adha prayers on Monday morning at various mosques in Jammu and Kashmir concluded peacefully, officials said, but the festive buzz was missing with curfew-like restrictions in place across the state.
According to the Union Home Ministry, people came out in good numbers to offer Eid prayers and namaz was offered at prominent mosques in Srinagar and Shopian.
Situation Difficult on Eid, People Restricted and Restrained: The Quint's Reporter on Ground
Speaking about the Eid celebrations in Kashmir on Monday, The Quint's reporter Poonam Agarwal, who is in Srinagar currently, said that people were restricted and restrained from going to many places.
"It was difficult... They offered prayers in the mohalla (neighbourhood) mosques. In the morning from 6 am, I have seen that restrictions were there in many places, cars were not allowed. And especially, at 8 am, after offering their prayers, people were stopped at many places so that they don't assemble. Security was very tight in the morning," she said.
Despite slight relaxation after around 11 am, the situation is still very bad in Srinagar, especially in downtown, she further pointed out.

Addressing a press conference on Monday evening, J&K Principal Secretary (Planning Commission) Rohit Kansal said the state had an "extremely peaceful and relaxed Eid". He further denied that any firing incident has happened in Jammu and Kashmir, saying:
Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, SP Pani was quoted by ANI as saying, "We just had a couple of minor localised incidents of law and order, which were handled very professionally. In these incidents, there were only a couple of injuries reported and otherwise, the situation in the entire valley is normal."
No Exchange of Sweets Along Indo-Pak Border on Eid
The customary exchange of sweets between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers along the International Border did not take place on the occasion of Eid on Monday as the neighbouring country refused to send its personnel, officials said.
There has been fresh strain in ties between India and Pakistan after the government scrapped special status to Jammu and Kashmir, with Islamabad unilaterally downgrading diplomatic relations.
Pak Undertaking Multiple Efforts to "Redress" Kashmir Situation: Pak Army Chief
Pakistan has initiated multiple efforts to "redress" the situation in Kashmir and will support the Kashmiri people "whatever effort it takes," Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa said on Monday, reported PTI.
“Government has initiated multiple efforts to redress Kashmir crisis,” Bajwa said while celebrating Eid with the Pakistani troops on the Line of Control in the Bagh sector.

Will Send Aircraft for Rahul Gandhi to Visit Kashmir: J&K Governor
J&K Governor Satya Pal Malik on Monday hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks that there have been reports of violence in Kashmir, saying he will send him an aircraft to visit the Valley and observe the ground situation.
The governor said Gandhi should feel ashamed about the behaviour of one of his leaders who was talking like an "idiot" in Parliament.
"I have invited Rahul Gandhi to come here. I will send you a plane, to observe (the situation) and then speak up. You are a responsible person and you should not speak like this," Malik said.
MHA Asks Twitter to Block 8 Accounts Spreading Misinformation on J&K
Four Twitter handles were suspended for allegedly spreading anti-India propaganda on Jammu and Kashmir following a request by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Four more accounts are expected to be blocked soon for allegedly being engaged in similar activities, they said.
When contacted, a Twitter spokesperson said, "We do not comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons. Legal requests made to Twitter are published twice-yearly in our Twitter Transparency Report."
The action has been taken as the Twitter accounts were allegedly spreading false and baseless propaganda against India on Jammu and Kashmir, the officials said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah might airdash to Srinagar to unfurl the Tricolour at Lal Chowk on Independence Day, 15 August, news agency IANS reported.
However officials at Jammu and Kashmir police headquarters have not yet confirmed Shah's much-awaited first visit after the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union Territories. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, currently monitoring the situation in the Valley, might also be present at Lal Chowk on Independence Day, sources said.
In New Delhi, sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs said Shah's visit to the Valley is expected, but exact dates cannot be shared with the media at the moment.

India's Ambassador to the US, Harsh Vardhan Shringla, said that America's decades-old policy on Kashmir has been no mediation but to encourage India and Pakistan to resolve their differences bilaterally.
"President Trump has made it very clear that his offer to mediate on Jammu and Kashmir is dependent on both India and Pakistan accepting it. Since India has not accepted the offer of mediation, he has made it clear that this is not on the table anymore,” Shringla told Fox News, the favourite news channel of the US president.
On 22 July, during his joint media appearance with Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan at the White House, President Trump stunned India by saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sought his mediation/arbitration on the Kashmir issue.

Pak Seeks Emergency Meeting of UNSC Over Kashmir
Pakistan has formally called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss India's move to revoke the special status to Jammu and Kashmir, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Tuesday, 13 August.
In video message, Qureshi said that he sent a formal letter to the president of the UNSC through Permanent Representative Maleha Lodhi to convene the meeting.
Qureshi said that the letter will also be shared with all members of the UNSC.
"I have requested in the letter that a special meeting of the Security Council should be called to discuss those actions of India which we consider as illegal and against the UN resolutions," he said.

China Asks for UNSC Meeting to Discuss Kashmir After Pak Writes Letter to UN
China has asked for "closed consultations" in the UN Security Council to discuss India revoking the special status to Jammu and Kashmir after Pakistan, Beijing's closest ally, wrote a letter on the issue to Poland, the Council President for the month of August, a top diplomat said.
The UN diplomat told PTI that a request for such a meeting was submitted very recently, but no date has yet been scheduled for it.

SC to Hear Petitions Against Article 370 on Friday
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Friday, 16 August, the petitions posing legal challenges to the Centre's decision to scrap provisions of Article 370 which abrogated special status to Jammu and Kashmir and subsequent measures putting restrictions on the working of media in the region.
A special bench, comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S A Bobde and S A Nazeer, will hear the petitions filed by advocate M L Sharma and Executive Editor, Kashmir Times, Anuradha Bhasin.
While the advocate has challenged the scrapping of provisions of Article 370 which has resulted in the creation of two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, the journalist has sought directions for restoring of all modes of communication, including mobile Internet and landline services, throughout the state to provide an enabling environment for the media to practise its profession.
