The Communist Party of India announced candidature of former JNU students' union leader Kanhaiya Kumar from Begusarai Lok Sabha seat in Bihar on Sunday, 24 March.

CPI’s decision to go solo comes days after it expecting to get the seat for Kumar as part of the mahagathbandhan (the grand alliance). The party’s move was lauded by Twitteratis across the spectrum.

Here’s how Twitter cheered the former student leader’s political plunge:

‘Hope for India’s Democracy’

With Kanhaiya’s foray into national politics front, people have expressed how they see this move as an attempt to revive democracy.

Kanhaiya’s fellow student leader Umar Khalid did not forget to remind people that CPI’s pick is also a scholar by academic qualification.

What Does This Say About Opposition, Ask Some

Yashwant Deshmukh, founder-director of C-Voter International remarked at Opposition party’s inability to accommodate Kanhaiya Kumar. “Forget real questions, not even token symbolism,” he tweeted.

‘Youth’s Torchbearer’

The younger lot on Twitter saw the move as a change in the wind, amounting to representation of youth in the Indian Parliament.

In Begusarai, Kumar will be pitted against the BJP's Giriraj Singh. An influential upper caste Bhumihar leader, the Union minister has been shifted from his Nawada seat.

The mahagathbandhan is yet to announce its candidate.
