JNUSU Moves Delhi HC Over Late Fee for Winter Semester Registration
The JNU Students Union, on Tuesday 21 January, moved the Delhi High Court, challenging the Draft Hostel Manual. The plea has been filed by JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh, and seeks directions from the court to restrict JNU authorities from imposing late fee on students for the winter semester registration.
82% Students Have Registered for the Winter Semester: JNU VC
Amid registration boycott by the students' union, Jawaharlal Nehru University administration on Monday said over 80 per cent of students have registered for the winter semester.
Out of 8,500 students at JNU, 82 per cent of students have cleared their hostel dues for winter semester registration as on Monday, the varsity's vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar said.
The remaining students are also expected to complete their registration process since the registration is still open with a late fee, he said.

The JNU administration on Tuesday, 14 January, said classes in many schools have begun for the new semester and the campus witnessed a "calm and peaceful" atmosphere, while a section of students and teachers continued to abstain from classes amid standoff with authorities over fee-hike issue.

JNU Violence: Delhi HC Asks Whatsapp, Google to Provide Information Sought by Police
The Delhi High Court asked WhatsApp and Google on Tuesday, 14 January, to preserve and provide information, as per their internal policies, to the police in relation to the recent violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
Justice Brijesh Sethi also asked the police to "at the earliest" summon witnesses and seize the phones of members of two WhatsApp chat groups on which the January 5 violence was allegedly coordinated.
Directions were also issued to the JNU administration and the State Bank of India branch inside the campus to preserve and provide at the earliest the CCTV footage of the violence as already requested by the police.
With the directions, the court disposed of a plea filed by JNU professors Ameet Parameswaran, Atul Sood and Shukla Vinayak Sawant seeking directions to the Delhi government and police that data, CCTV footage and other evidence relating to the January 5 violence on the varsity campus be preserved.

JNU Fee-Hike Issue Sorted Out, Continuing Protests Not Justified: HRD Minister
HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' on Monday said the continuation of protests by JNU students is not justified as the fee-hike issue has been settled.
"The fee-related matter of JNU has been sorted out following several rounds of discussions with representatives of JNU students and teachers," Nishank said.
"The main demand by students related to increase in service and utility charges and other related issues have now been settled and the continuation of agitation by the students is no longer justified," he added.
Delhi Police Records JNUSU Prez Aishe Ghosh's Statement
A team of Delhi Police's Crime branch on Monday visited the Jawaharlal Nehru University and questioned three students, including JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh in connection with the January 5 violence on the varsity's campus, officials said.
Pankaj Mishra, Vasker Vijay Mech and Ghose were questioned by the crime branch's officers, they said.
The trio are among the nine suspects whose pictures were recently released by police following the January 5 violence in which 35 students, including Ghosh, were injured.

49 People Asked to Join JNU Violence Probe
The Delhi Police's crime branch probing the JNU violence said on Sunday that it has sent notices to 49 people, including Akshat Awasthi and Rohit Shah who featured in a sting operation conducted by a TV news channel, to join the investigation.
Awasthi and Shah are first year students of Jawaharlal Nehru University. They have been sent notices to join the probe, officials said.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) has alleged that the varsity administration has blocked the registration of 300 students on the basis of 'fake Proctor inquiries'.
The union had on Saturday, 11 January, asked students of the university to pay their academic tuition fee but not the hiked hostel fee.
"Today the Vice Chancellor first blocked the fee payment portal and then blocked the payment of tuition fees. It is clear that the VC was lying through the teeth when he said students want to register but are not being allowed to by protesters," JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh said.

208 Academicians Blame 'Left-Wing Coterie' for Deteriorating Academic Environment in Country
More than 200 academicians, including vice chancellors of universities, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, 12 January, blaming a "small coterie of Left-wing activists" for a deteriorating academic environment in the country.
"We observe with dismay that in the name of student politics, a disruptive far-left agenda is being pursued. The recent turn of events in campuses from JNU to Jamia, from AMU to Jadavpur alarms us to the deteriorating academic environment due to the shenanigans of a small coterie of left-wing activists," they wrote to the prime minister.
The signatories to the statement include Hari Singh Gour University VC R P Tiwari, Central University of South Bihar VC HCS Rathore and Sardar Patel University VC Shirish Kulkarni, among others, according to official sources.

JNU Violence: Delhi Police Says It Has Identified 37 Students From WhatsApp Group
Delhi Police has identified 37 students from a WhatsApp group created during the 5 January violence on the JNU campus, sources told PTI.
They said the identified people do not belong to any left or right leaning organisations.
Those identified are students who were in favour of the semester registration process and wanted to enroll themselves, PTI reported quoting sources.
Alerted Police of Masked Mob at 4 pm, Help Came 4 Hours Later: JNU Wardens
Two wardens at JNU’s Sabarmati Hostel have said that an armed and masked mob was seen moving out of the hostel around 4 pm on 5 January, which is when they alerted both police and JNU security but no help arrived until 8 pm, reports The Indian Express.
In an incident report dated 6 January, Mess Warden Dr Sneha and Sanitation Warden Dr Raj Yadav have said that the mob initially consisted of 40-50 people carrying sticks and iron rods who returned to the campus at 7 pm as a larger group of around 150 people and attacked residents and vandalised rooms.
They have demanded an investigation “looking at the gravity and seriousness of the incident”.
JNU Admin Says Doing Security Audit of Hostels
The Jawaharlal Nehru University has undertaken a security audit of the hostels to check stay of outsiders and unauthorised students there, following the 5 January violence on the campus, the JNU administration said on Saturday.
In a letter sent to hostel wardens, Umesh Kadam, dean of students, asked them to notify all hostel residents to “follow the rules regarding having guests in the hostel room as per the procedures and rules of IHA and provide the necessary details in the forms accordingly.”
In case, any outsider/un-authorised student/guest is found staying in the rooms, necessary action will be initiated against the resident student as per Inter-Hall Administration (IHA) rules and the details of such guests shall be forwarded to the Station House Officer, Police Station, Vasant Kunj North, New Delhi, the notice stated.
On 7 January, SHO of Vasant Kunj (North) Ritu Raj had written to the varsity, requesting it to do an audit of hostels for outsiders or unauthorised students.
Cops Ignored Messages About Mob's Presence in JNU: JNUSU
JNU Students’ Union on Saturday, 11 January alleged that the police had been informed about a mob’s presence in the campus much before the violence on 5 January but they ignored the messages.
“They were informed at 3 pm and the messages were read at 3:07 pm but the messages were ignored,” the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) claimed at a press conference.
It also alleged that the RSS-affiliated ABVP was involved in attacking women students and JNUSU office-bearers last week.
The students’ union said ABVP members hit women students even on January 4 and when JNUSU General Secretary Satish Chandra Yadav intervened, they attacked him as well.
“Attackers targeted specific rooms in Sabarmati Hostel and even threw students from balcony, but did not touch the room of an ABVP activist,” it added.

JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh addressed the media on Saturday, 11 January, and said that the fight to save the democratic fabric of the country will go on.
“Comrade Pinarayi said fight on and from here JNU will take the fight on. The fight to save the democratic fabric of the country will go on. I would like to thank the people of Kerala who stood by us during the attacks that we were facing,” Ghosh said.
Earlier on Saturday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Ghosh and said the whole country was with them in their protest against the fee hike in the institution and Citizenship Amendment Act.
Vijayan met Ghosh at Kerala House in New Delhi, expressed solidarity with their protest and also gifted her a book, ‘Halla Bol: The Death and Life of Safdar Hashmi’ by Sudhanva Deshpande.
JNU Attack an Act of 'Terrorist Leftist Students': Ram Madhav
BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav alleged that the violence in Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was an act of a small number of “terrorist Leftist students”, who have been hampering studies and research of thousands of students there for decades.
He called the 5 January violence in JNU as “conspiracy of Leftists and their supporters”.
“Since decades, thousands of students have been tortured due to the terror of Leftists in JNU. The violence seen now is the culmination of the same thing. A few, small number of terrorist Leftist students have always been hampering the rights of thousands of students to study and conduct research in JNU,” Madhav alleged.

“The terror created by some of the activist students went to such an extent that many of our students had to leave the hostels. From past several days, we have enhanced security in the campus to make sure that innocent students are not hurt,” he said, according to ANI.

Probe Into JNU Violence Case 'Shoddy'; Sack Delhi Police Chief, JNU V-C: Cong
Accusing the Delhi Police of conducting a "shoddy" investigation into the JNU violence case, the Congress on Friday alleged that it was clearly influenced by the government, the home minister and the ruling party, and demanded removal of the city police chief and the university's vice chancellor, reported PTI.
Congress' senior spokesperson Ajay Maken said question marks have been raised on the investigations by the Delhi police as it has "failed to carry out the probe independently" and identify the culprits.

Nishank Says 'Distressed' Over Involvement of JNU Students in Violence
Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on Friday said he was “distressed” over the involvement of JNU students in the 5 January violence as pointed out by the Delhi Police, reports PTI.
The ministry will not tolerate any violence and anarchy on the campus as it is committed to ensuring academic atmosphere in educational institutions, he said.
The Union minister also appealed to the students to maintain a "dignified" atmosphere in the university.

The JNU Teachers' Association on Friday accused the Delhi Police of underplaying the violence in JNU and termed its version as “disturbing”, reports PTI.
“Such underplaying of the incidents, which shocked the nation and subjected several to extreme trauma, is deeply disturbing,” the JNUTA said.
ABVP Takes out March in JNU Against 5 Jan Violence
RSS-affiliate ABVP on Friday took out a march inside the JNU campus against the 5 January incident, carrying banners which read ‘Red Terror down down’ and ‘Reclaim our study’, reports PTI.
They started their march from Sabarmati T-point and moved towards the varsity's main gate. As they walked, police in plain clothes also accompanied them.
'Conducive Environment, No Service & Utility Charges': JNU V-C Appeals to Students
JNU V-C Jagadesh Kumar on Friday appealed to the students to come back to the campus. “There is a conducive environment and I appeal students to be back,” he said.
On the police briefing he said, “We also want that the report of the investigation comes and if culprits are recognised then we hope that they will be punished.”
'Left Design in JNU Unmasked': Smriti Irani on Police Briefing
After the Delhi Police briefing on JNU violence, Union Cabinet Minister Smriti Irani tweeted, “Left design in JNU unmasked. They led mobs of mayhem, destroyed public property paid for by taxpayers, disallowed new students from being enrolled, used the campus as a political battleground.”
Meanwhile, Union Mionister Prakash Javadekar told ANI, “Today's police conference established that for last 5 days the chorus that was created deliberately to blame ABVP, BJP and others, that wasn't true. It's the left organisations that pre-planned violence, disabled CCTV and destroyed the server.”
'I Also Have Proof': Aishe Ghosh on Being Named as a Suspect in JNU Violence
On being named as a suspect by the Delhi Police in the JNU violence case, JNUSU president elect Aishe Ghosh said, “Delhi Police can do their inquiry. I also have evidence to show how I was attacked.”
“I have full faith in the law and order of this country that investigation will be fair. I will get justice. But why is Delhi Police biased? My complaint has not been filed as an FIR. I have not carried out any assault,” she said.
Aishe Ghosh Among 9 Suspects: Delhi Police on JNU Violence
The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch on Friday, 10 January, briefed the media on JNU violence. “Three cases have been registered till now, and they are being investigated by us,” Dr Joy Tirkey, DCP (Crime) told the media.
Of the nine, seven belong to left-leaning student organisations while two are affiliated to right-wing students' body, the police said.
Addressing a press conference, DCP (Crime Branch) Joy Tirkey, who is probing the case, said a majority of the students wanted to register for the winter semester from 1 to 5 January, but the left-leaning students' bodies were not allowing them to do so.
"No suspect has been detained till now, but we will begin to interrogate the suspects soon," he said.
Classes to Resume on 13 January: JNU V-C
Regular classes at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) wiIl resume on 13 January, the university’s Vice Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar has said on Friday, 10 January.
“In meeting with the deans and chairpersons, it was decided that classes would start from 13 January. MHRD was informed that if required, the registration date for winter semester would further be extended,” the vice chancellor said, reports ANI.
He added that “the JNU admin is implementing record of discussions with MHRD issued on 11 Dec and making every effort to make sure that students and teachers have a conducive environment to pursue their academic activities.”

Union minister Smriti Irani has spoken about actor Deepika Padukone's visit to JNU on Tuesday.
"I think that anybody who has read the news knew where you are going to stand... knew that you are standing with people who celebrate every time a CRPF jawan is killed... I would rather know what her political affiliation is than not know... I can’t deny her that right that she will stand next to people who will beat up other girls, who don’t see eye-to-eye ideologically, in private parts. That’s her freedom (sic)," Irani was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.
“She made her political affiliation known in 2011 that she supports the Congress party... It’s her right (to) stand next to people who say ‘bharat tere tukde honge’,” she reportedly added.
'Situation in University is Peaceful and Normal': JNU VC
Speaking after the HRD Ministry met with a five-member team from JNU on Friday, Vice Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar said that all decisions taken earlier at HRD Ministry about hostel fee are being implemented in totality.
The VC added that the semester registration deadline will be extended further, if needed.
"The situation in university is peaceful and normal. The university will continue to function and conduct academic activities. We would like to help every student continue their academic goals," he said.

“This section considers itself progressive, becomes part of the gang which raises slogans of 'Afzal hum sharminda hain, tere qaatil zinda hain' and 'Bharat tere tukde honge insha allah insha allah' and supports them,” the Union Minister was quoted by ANI as saying.

Several cab and auto-rickshaw drivers are not willing to take commuters to the JNU campus or pick them up from the varsity premises in the wake of Sunday's violence.

Removal of JNU VC Not a Solution: HRD Ministry
The HRD Ministry on Thursday said the removal of Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar was not a solution.
HRD Secretary Amit Khare said officials of the ministry will talk to Kumar again on Friday over the students' claims of revised fee not being implemented.
"The removal of the vice chancellor is not a solution," he said, adding the ministry officials will also meet JNU Students' Union after meeting Kumar.
No Compromise Over Removal of VC: JNUSU President Aishe Ghosh
JNU Students' Union President Aishe Ghosh, on Thursday, said the students and faculty will not relent till Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar is removed.
She made the comments after meeting HRD officials.
Ghosh said they appealed to HRD Ministry to remove the VC, which, in turn, said a dialogue will be held on Friday.
"We will not compromise with HRD Ministry over the removal of the VC. It is still thinking whether the VC should be removed," she said

No Deviation From HRD Ministry's Fee Hike Formula: JNU VC
There has been no deviation from the "formula" arrived at by the HRD Ministry about the fee hike and students are not being charged any services or utility fees as decided, JNU Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar said on Thursday.
"As far as the fee issue is concerned, there has been no deviation from the formula arrived at the HRD Ministry last month. As decided, students are not being charged any services or utility fees," Kumar said.
"We have also written to UGC to release funds for covering the utility and service charges as decided," he added.
Delhi Police Takes JNUSU, JNUTA Protestors to Meet HRD Officials
Delhi Police, on Thursday, took a delegation of JNU teachers and students to meet HRD officials, after stopping them near Shastri Bhawan during a protest march over the January 5 violence at the university campus.
The officer-bearers of JNUSU and JNUTA are expected to discuss the violence that took place in the university on Sunday, the hostel fee hike and removal of the vice chancellor with the officials of the Human Resources Development Ministry.
JNU Attack: Hundreds March to HRD Ministry, Demand Removal of VC
Hundreds of demonstrators, including students and members of civil society organisations, hit the streets on Thursday, 9 January, protesting the recent violence at JNU and demanding resignation of the varsity vice-chancellor.
The protesters, carrying placards and banners, started a march from Mandi House towards the HRD Ministry. They shouted slogans demanding strict action against those involved in the campus violence of January 5 that left around 35 injured.
CPI(M) leaders Sitaram Yechury, D Raja, Prakash Karat and Brinda Karat also joined the march. LJD leader Sharad Yadav was also among the protesters.
Yechury, CPI(M) general secretary, said, "For three hours, people wearing masks beat up varsity students. They entered the campus with police being present at the main gate." Alleging that the incident could not have happened without the vice-chancellor knowing about it, he said, "The VC has to go".

HRD Gave JNU VC Ultimatum in December: Report
JNU VC Jagadesh Kumar was given an ultimatum by the Centre on 11 December, to either accept a compromise formula or submit his resignation, reported The Indian Express.
The newspaper said that while he agreed for a compromise, the VC backtracked a day later. In than 48 hours after the ultimatum, the Higher Education Secretary R Subrahmanyam was shunted, the report said.

The police have collected dump data of mobile phones of people from campus to identify the culprits behind the Sunday's assault on the JNU students, officials said on Wednesday, 8 January.
Police said that several students have come forward to share information regarding the incident on Sunday after police made a public appeal requesting people to share information, footage and video clips relating to the incident.
Hundreds Join Candle March in Walled City
Hundreds of people sat in front of the Jama Masjid in Delhi on Wednesday with candles and posters to protest against the amended citizenship law, NRC and the National Population Register.
Residents, mostly from all parts of Old Delhi -- Lal Kuan, Gali Kasim, Bhuja Pandi and Ajmeri Gate -- participated in the protest, where they also expressed solidarity with the students of the JNU and the Jamia Millia Islamia.

BJP MP from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, while condemning the attack on JNU students, said that he considers this very unfortunate.

Responding to Congress' fact-finding team and DMK leader Kanimozhi's visit to JNU, the varsity's V-C on Wednesday told news agency ANI, "Please don't politicise our university. Please leave us alone and let us do our work."
On the issue of fee hike, he said, "We may even approach the alumni of our university to create a fund to help all such students who come from poor sections of the society."

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram took a dig at JNU Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar on Wednesday, saying he should take his own advice of putting the past behind and leave the university.
Kumar, who has been under fire from students and faculty members for allegedly not doing enough when they were brutally attacked by a masked mob on the campus, urged the students on Tuesday to put the past behind and return to the varsity's premises.

Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday alleged the recent attack on students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi was government sponsored and sought to know what action has been taken against the culprits, reported news agency PTI.
He also described as 'shameful' the police registering FIRs against those injured in the Sunday violence.

Senior DMK leader Kanimozhi visited JNU on Wednesday and said her party will fight for the students.
Kanimozhi visited the Sabarmati Hostel where students told her that it was a targeted attack as the entry of masked mob was facilitated by university's security guards.
"The entire country is with you. Don't lose heart. There are many people who have condemned it... We will raise the issue. We will fight for you," she told students.

Actor Ranvir Shorey who has stated that he is in favour of the amended Citizenship Act speaking to News18 said, “CAA when seen in isolation is a humanitarian Act, one that has been pending since years. Shorey added, “JNU attack happened while we were in the meeting. I found out about it only after. I am aware that there has been a protest against the fee hike but hooliganism is not an answer to hooliganism. Emphasising on the fact that he condemns violence, he continued, “I stand with not just the JNU students, but anybody who has faced any kind of brutality. The culprits should be jailed. My problem is that this is becoming a very muddled up issue.”

Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Anil Deshmukh told The Quint that the government will review the FIR lodged against Mehak Prabhu, an artist who was seen with a ‘Free Kashmir’ placard.
