Around 100 MPs have been contacted, they have decided to write to the President demanding sacking of JNU VC, CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury was quoted by PTI as saying on Tuesday, 7 January.
Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone also made headlines as she joined the protests at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
The whole nation erupted in protests against the violence unleashed on the students of JNU by masked miscreants, who entered the campus and thrashed students and faculty members. The masked mob also vandalised hostel rooms and damaged college property.

HRD Ministry Seeks Immediate Report From JNU Registrar Over Violence on Campus

25 of Our Members Seriously Injured, 11 Missing: ABVP
The ABVP on Sunday alleged that its members, including its JNU unit secretary, were attacked by members of the Left-backed students' outfits and 11 of the RSS-affiliated outfit's members were missing.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) alleged that its members were "brutally" attacked by students affiliated to Left student organisations SFI, AISA and the DSF.
"Around 25 students have been seriously injured in this attack and there is no information as to the whereabouts of 11 students," the outfit said. "Masked goons of Left entered the Jawaharlal Nehru University today and beat up the students who went for registration."
"The JNU students affiliated to ABVP were brutally attacked," it said.
According to the ABVP, its JNU unit secretary and its last year's JNUSU presidential candidate, Manish Jangid, was "severely injured (his hand is fractured). Many students have suffered head injuries and a few students are still missing".

Aligarh Muslim University Students' Union Calls JNU Violence 'Blot on India's Constitutional Democracy'
The Aligarh Muslim University Students' Union (AMUSU) reacting to the violence at JNU on Sunday, called it a "blot on the consitutional democracy of India" in an official statement.
“The visuals and media reports describing the hostage like situation at JNU last night, wherein students were locked in their hostel rooms for four hours and a state guarded mob went on rampage are extremely threatening and shameful,” their statement read.
AMUSU stated that the entry of men and women holding lathis, rods and other weapons into a campus, beating students, attacking media fraternity and yet the police was acting as silent spectators for hours raising serious questions on the intent and conduct of police.
Police forces are also on alert with additional forces being deployed in Universities across the state including AMU.

Students of the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune staged a protest on Sunday midnight against violence at JNU in Delhi.
“They are also planning to hold another demonstration on Monday, a meeting for which is currently underway,” a member of FTII students' association said, reported PTI.
On Sunday midnight, the FTII students carried 'mashals' (fire torches) while shouting slogans against the violence and expressing solidarity with the JNU students.

'Constant Demonization of Students by the Govt': Amnesty Condemns JNU Mob Attack
Reacting to the mob attack at JNU, the Executive Director of Amnesty International India, Avinash Kumar said, “The violence unleased on the students inside the JNU campus is shocking. For the Delhi police to tolerate such a violent attack that has resulted in grave injuries is even worse and shows a shameful disregard for the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.”
He added, “It is alarming to note the ease with which the mob entered a ‘secured’ university space and were able to mete out such violence.”
Citing the inability of the Delhi police to provide security to JNU or Jamia, he said, “The constant demonization of the students by the Government of India continues to increase their vulnerability to such attacks and awards impunity to the attackers.”
'Most Clinching Proof of Country's Descent into Fascism,' Says Chidambaram
Congress leader P Chidambaram on JNU violence said, “This incident is perhaps the most clinching evidence that we are rapidly descending into anarchy. It happened in the national capital in India’s foremost University under the watch of the Central government, Home Minister, LG and Police Commissioner.”
He added, “ We demand that the perpetrators of violence be identified and arrested within 24 hours and brought to justice. We also demand that accountability on officers be fixed and action taken immediately.”

'JNU Violence Reminded Me of 26/11 Terror Attack': Uddhav Thackeray
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on JNU violence said, “What was the need for attackers to wear masks? They were cowards. I was watching on TV and it reminded me of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. I will not tolerate such attacks in Maharashtra.”
Uddhav added, “There is an atmosphere of fear among the students in the country, we all need to come together and instill confidence in them,” reported ANI.
'Campuses Should Not Be Made Political Battlefields': Irani
Referring to violence inside Delhi's JNU, Union Miniser Smriti Irani today said campuses should not be made a “political battlefield.”
“I had said it earlier as well and I amreiterating it now that educational institutions should not be made 'rajiniti ka akhada' (political battlefield) as it affects the life and progress of our students,” Irani told reporters when asked about the violence in the campus, reported PTI.
“I hope students will not be used as 'rajnitik mohre' (political tools),” the Amethi MP said.
JNUTA Seeks Removal of VC, Inquiry Into Attack Incident on Campus
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) today demanded the removal of Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar after the attack on students and faculty members by an armed masked mob, reported PTI.
Addressing a press conference, the JNU teachers also demanded an inquiry into the violence on Sunday when a masked mob armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus.

Students affiliated to the RSS- backed ABVP today held a demonstration outside Ruia College in Matunga against violence in Delhi's JNU and accused Leftist outfits and the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) of orchestrating it.
At least 28 people, including JNU Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured. Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, ABVP national secretary Ankit Owhal said, “The Left and JNUSU are responsible for Sunday's violence. Some 23 ABVP students were injured. The police must arrest the people who went around in masks attacking students.”
'JNU VC Complicit in Pre-Planned JNU Mob Attack': Sitaram Yechury
CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said, “It is clearly a pre-planned attack from outsiders. It is an assault on reason, rationality and democracy. For five hours nearly, the VC did not respond or asked the police to come in and restore normalcy and that makes him also complicit in this attack.”
The party in a statement also said, “The Vice Chancellor should be sacked for this complicity in permitting this attack.”

Former JNU Chancellor and senior Congress leader Karan Singh today slammed the university's Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar over the violence on campus, alleging that he had been “absent” at this crucial juncture and was “completely ineffective.”
Expressing shock at the events at the premier university, Singh urged the Home Ministry to get the whole matter impartially probed and apprehend the “masked miscreants who violently attacked university students, including women, and take necessary action against them regardless of their political affiliations.”

They demanded that the JNU administartion and the law enforcement agencies act swiftly and apprehend the perpetrators.

TMC MPs Prevented From Entering JNU
A day after the mob attack at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), a delegation of TMC MPs which had gone to the varsity to express solidarity with the students was not allowed to enter the campus on Monday, said party sources, according to PTI.

Jadavpur Deputy Commissioner Sudip Sarkar on Monday, 6 January, denied that the police lathi-charged Jadavpur University students amid reports of clashes between supporters of the Left and the BJP in Kolkata, according to ANI.
"While we were chasing BJP workers, some Jadavpur University (JU) students entered the mob. We could not differentiate the JU students from BJP workers who were burning tyres. We did not lathi-charge JU students," Sarkar said.

The Delhi Police on Monday rejected charges of reaching the JNU campus late despite several pleas by the students' union, asserting that they responded to PCR calls and law-and-order situation professionally to bring things under control.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Devender Arya on Tuesday said that no fresh incident has been reported from any part of JNU.

'Will Find Every Opportunity to Make Sure That Normalcy Returns': JNU V-C
Addressing the media two days after violence broke out at JNU on Tuesday, JNU Vice-Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar termed the incident as unfortunate.
"Our heart goes out to all injured students... Our campus is known for debates and discussions to resolve to any issues. Violence is not a solution. We will find every opportunity to make sure that normalcy returns to the university," he said.
Kumar also alleged that some of the students who opposed the registration process damaged the registration room and attacked him on 14 December.
"The registration process has been restarted. Students can register for the winter semester now. Let us make a new beginning and put the past behind," he added.

Days after the Jawaharlal Nehru University was rocked by violence, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday said educational campuses must not become safe havens for the politics of hate and violence to thrive, reports PTI.
He also said academic endeavors and co-curricular initiatives must attain primacy in universities and not factionalism and divisive tendencies.
“But our campuses must not become safe havens for the politics of hate and violence to thrive,” Naidu said in his address at the silver jubilee celebrations of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
Police Ask People to Provide Info on JNU Attack, Forensic Teams Look for Clues at Campus
Delhi Police on Tuesday issued a public appeal seeking pictures, footage or any information related to about Sunday's violence in JNU campus that left 34 people injured even as forensic teams looked for evidence, reports PTI.
Teams from Physics, Chemistry and Biology divisions of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) were in the university, sources told the news agency.
The Physics team will collect evidence such as rods and stones used by the masked mob to attack students and teachers at the university, while the Chemistry team will collect samples of chemicals, if there are any. The biology team will collect DNA samples, among other evidence.
A team of photo experts from the FSL was also present at the campus.

Owaisi Slams Police for Booking Injured JNU Students
Condemning the police for filing cases against students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) injured in recent violence, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday said trespass and attempt to murder cases should be booked against those responsible for the incidents, reports PTI.
