JNU Row: Delhi Cops Likely to Slap Sedition Charges on Umar Khalid
Delhi Police lacks evidence to nail Kanhaiya Kumar who had been slapped with sedition charges earlier.
JNU students Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and seven others are likely to be indicted by the Delhi Police Special Cell which claims to possess credible evidence against them in the 9 February 2016 event, where slogans were raised in favour of convicted Parliament attacker Afzal Guru.
According to a Times of India report, which cites details from a draft chargesheet, the police failed to provide proof to nail Kanhaiya Kumar, who was also slapped with sedition charges and jailed along with Umar.
Some 40 video clips prove that 'anti-India' slogans were raised at the JNU campus that day. Around 140 individuals can be seen in the clips, but nine 'outsiders' (Kashmiris) were identified.
The chargesheet also claims that anti-India posters were created for the event.
The report further said that the chargesheet, which will be filed under Section 121A (sedition) and criminal conspiracy, is now under the police commissioner's scanner.
Regarding Kanhaiya's fate, the matter has been left to the court.
