Senior politicians, including UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister-deignate Narendra Modi, paid tribute to India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 55th death anniversary on Monday, 27 May.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi, along with mother Sonia, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former Vice President Hamid Ansari, paid homage to Nehru at Shantivan in New Delhi.

"We remember his contributions to our nation," tweeted Modi as his tribute to the former prime minister.

While remembering him, many echoed Nehru's contribution to "building a modern India".

In his tweet, Rahul reminded people of Nehru's contribution in building modern institutions which helped "democracy survive in India".

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot also took to Twitter to pay tribute to Nehru.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu said "He will always be remembered for his contributions to building a modern India."

Congress Members Remember Jawaharlal Nehru

Apsara Reddy, national general secretary of Mahila Congress, in her tweet said "as India rapidly marches towards an identity shaped by blinkered leaders pushing a linear agenda; we must preserve the ideologies of #JawaharLalNehru Ji."

Congress' Jai Parkash Aggarwal also tweeted remembering Nehru and his ideas.

MP Supriya Sule also tweeted in Nehru's remembrance.

Party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi in his tweet said "India is a cultural unity amidst diversity,a bundle of contradictions held together by strong invisible threads.Overwhelmed again & again her spirit ws nvr conquered & today when she appears to be plaything of a proud conqueror,remains unsubdued & unconquered".
