Several states across India including national capital Delhi, Punjab, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana imposed a complete lockdown on Sunday, 22 March, to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, while many other states closed major districts.

Gujarat on Sunday reported first death due to coronavirus infection as 67-year-old patient died in Surat, taking India’s death toll to seven. Earlier in the day, two deaths were reported from Maharashtra and Bihar each.

The total number of coronavirus cases across the globe stood at at least 3,00,097 according to AFP, even as the official number in India rose to 396 on Sunday, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

While a ‘Janata Curfew’ was observed nationwide on Sunday from 7 am to 9 pm to curb the spread of COVID-19, several states decided to extend it.

Govt Asks Airlines to Let 'Home Quarantine' Passengers Fly to Their Homes

The central government on Saturday instructed Indian airlines to let the passengers, coming from abroad and instructed to be under home quarantine, take domestic transit flights, PTI reported.

As per current instructions, they can fly to their home and then quarantine for 14 days, said AK Gadpayle, principal consultant (DGHS), Control Room Triage, COVID-19 Screening Centre, IGI Airport.

People Entering Meghalaya Required to Register on COVID-19 Monitoring System

According to the Govt of Meghalaya, all people entering the state are required to mandatorily register on the COVID-19 Monitoring System, in addition to undergoing health screening as required by authorities, ANI reported.

ICMR Issues Guidelines for COVID-19 Testing by Private Labs

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued guidelines for COVID-19 testing by private laboratories. The maximum cost for testing samples capped at Rs 4,500 (Rs 1,500 for screening test for likely cases and an additional Rs 3,000 for confirmation test).

Chile Records First Coronavirus Death

An 83-year-old woman has become Chile's first victim of the coronavirus pandemic, health authorities said on Saturday, AFP reported.

Health Minister Jaime Manalich earlier in the day said that 103 new cases had been reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total to over 500. In Latin America, only Brazil has registered more cases.

Of Chile's cases, 33 have been hospitalized and 359 are in the capital Santiago, Manalich said.

On the day of the ‘janata curfew’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “In a few minutes from now, the ‘janta curfew’ commences. Let us all be a part of this curfew, which will add tremendous strength to the fight against COVID-19 menace. The steps we take now will help in the times to come.”

Home Minister Amit Shah also put out a message on Twitter. He said, “As janta curfew, people’s movement begins, I pledge to strictly follow PM Modi’s call. I also urge my fellow countrymen to participate. Let’s break the chain and protect our nation against this pandemic with social distancing and self isolation.”

Four-Year-Old Suspected for COVID-19 in Assam Tests Negative

The four-year-old child who was suspected of being infected by COVID-19, and tested in Jorhat Medical College and RMRC, Dibrugarh has been found negative. “There is no COVID-19 positive case in Assam so far,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Twitter.

Mahindra Suspends Manufacturing Operations in Maharashtra

Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) on Sunday said it has decided to suspend manufacturing operations at its manufacturing plants in Maharashtra in order to ensure employee safety and contain the spread of coronavirus.

The company in a statement said it has suspended manufacturing operations at its Nagpur plant with immediate effect and will also halt production at Chakan (Pune) and Kandivali (Mumbai) from Monday night onwards.

TN Government Extends 'Janata Curfew' till Monday Morning

While Tamil Nadu came to a virtual standstill on Sunday as people observed the 'Janata Curfew' proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to help check the spread of coronavirus, the state government extended it till 5 am on Monday.

Global Infections Cross 3,00,000: AFP

There are more than 3,00,000 declared cases of the new coronavirus around the world, according to an AFP tally on Sunday.

At least 3,00,097 infections have been confirmed globally, including 12,895 deaths, in 169 countries and territories, according to data collected from national authorities and the World Health Organization.

Seven More Test Positive in Punjab, Total Cases now 21 in State

Seven more persons tested positive for coronavirus in Punjab on Sunday, taking the total number of confirmed cases of the deadly infection to 21 in the state, official said.

All fresh coronavirus cases were reported from Nawanshahr district on Sunday and they were either family members of a 70-year-old man, who was earlier tested positive, or the ones who came in contact with the septuagenarian, the official said.

Cong Leader Jitin Prasada, Who Attended Party with Kanika Kapoor, Tests Negative

Senior UP Congress leader Jitin Prasada, who had attended a party with Bollywood singer Kanika Kapoor days before she tested positive for coronavirus, tested negative for COVID-19 disease on Sunday, the King George's Medical University said in a statement.

Speaking to PTI, Prasada said, "My wife and I have been tested negative for COVID-19. We had gone to the party of Kanika Kapoor on 15 March. The results of the test came on Sunday after the samples were taken yesterday."

Queen's Aide Tests Positive for Coronavirus: Reports

A royal aide at Buckingham Palace has reportedly tested positive for the coronavirus while Queen Elizabeth II was still at her London residence.

The 93-year-old monarch shifted out of the palace to Windsor Castle indefinitely on Thursday as a precaution after all her engagements were cancelled and reports are that she is healthy.

According to UK media reports, it is not known how close the royal aide in question would have got to the Queen but every member of Royal Household staff the person came into contact with has since been placed self-isolation.

Coronavirus: MP govt asks staff to work from home till Mar 31

The Madhya Pradesh government on Sunday directed the employees and officials of all its departments to work from home starting Monday till 31 March in view of coronavirus threat.

However, the order is not applicable to the departments providing essential and emergency services, like health, police, fire brigade, electricity supply, sanitation.

NPR, First Phase of Census Likely to be Deferred

The exercise to update the National Population Register (NPR) and the first phase of the Census 2021, scheduled to begin from 1 April, are likely to be deferred for an indefinite period due to Coronavirus pandemic, officials said.

A formal order on this effect is expected within a day or two.

Discussions are going on at the highest level of the government and in all probability, the NPR and house listing phase of the Census work will be deferred till the threat of the Coronavirus is over, a home ministry official said.

Meghalaya Restricts Entry of People from Other States

The Meghalaya government has restricted entry of people from other states in view of the coronavirus threat.

A senior home department official said that it is applicable to all people visiting Meghalaya from other states, and those travelling to other states via this northeastern state.

In separate circulars, the BSE and the NSE said they have allowed brokers and traders to take terminals outside the authorised locations. The move will permit brokers to work from home.

The arrangement will continue till 30 April or longer if the situation demands, they added.

Prohibitory Orders Declared in Delhi till 31 March

The Delhi Police on Sunday declared prohibitory orders till 31 March midnight in view of coronavirus outbreak and banned protests, demonstrations and other gatherings in the city.

The order issued by Delhi Police Commissioner S N Shrivastava will come into effect from 9 pm on March 22 and will remain valid till 31st of this month.

According to the prohibitory orders issued, assembly of any kind for demonstrations, processions, protest is banned.

Any gathering- social, cultural, political, religious, academic, sports, seminar or conference is prohibited.

Lockdown Announced in Delhi

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday, 22 March announced lockdown in the national capital until 31 March in the wake of coronavirus outbreak.

All domestic flights into Delhi have also been banned from tomorrow till March 31. No public transport services including private buses, autos, e-rickshaws will be allowed during the lockdown period in Delhi. 25 percent of the DTC bus fleet will continue to ply on roads of Delhi to carry people involved in essential services.

All private offices will remain closed but the employees - both permanent and contractual - will be considered to be on-duty. The companies will have to provide them the salary for this duration.

During the lockdown in Delhi, no document or proof will be sought from a person if they say that they are out on streets to provide or avail any essential service

Air India stated on Sunday that vigilante resident welfare associations (RWAs) and neighbours were ostracising and calling police on its crew members, who went abroad as a part of their duty.

"It is alarming to note that in many localities, vigilante Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and neighbours have started ostracising the crew, obstructing them from performing their duty or even calling in the police, simply because the crew travelled abroad in the course of their duty," the airline said in a press release.
