J&K Govt Bans Social Media for a Month, Or ‘Until Further Orders’

The list includes Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp among other sites.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has placed a ban on social media in the Valley for a period of one month or until further instructions come in, reported Kashmiri media.

In an order from J&K's Home Department, the state says:

Any message or class of messages to or from any person or class of persons relating to any subject or any pictorial content through the following social networking sites shall not be transmitted in the Kashmir Valley, with immediate effect.

Among 17 other sites, the list includes:

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
  • Whatsapp
  • Google
  • Tumblr

The order said that "such elements are transmitting objectionable contents, to spread disaffection amongst public at large in Kashmir".
