One person was killed and at least 11 others, including six policemen, were injured including in a clash between locals and police personnel in Jaipur’s Ramganj late on 8 September. A curfew has been imposed in four police station areas and mobile internet services have been suspended in the city.
However, the police has now said that the situation is under control in the violence-hit areas.
The incident happened late on Friday night when an agitated mob gathered outside Ramganj police station following an incident of alleged assault of a couple by a police constable in the area, a senior police official said.
According to eyewitnesses, a policeman tried to stop a bike for a routine vehicle check in the area. The rider tried to escape but the policeman managed to hit the pillion rider, who was taken to a police station.
The mob which gathered after this incident went on a rampage, torching a power house and setting ablaze five vehicles, prompting police to open fire in the air to disperse the mob.
The situation in the four police station areas of Jaipur, where curfew was imposed, has been brought under control, a police officer said.
The police also said that the exact cause of death of the person will be ascertained only after the post-mortem report and an inquiry into the matter.
The Delhi-Agra route through Jaipur has been diverted. Large number of security personnel have been deployed in the violence-hit areas, the police added.
“Curfew has been imposed till further orders in Manak Chowk, Subhash Chowk, Galta Gate and Ramganj police station areas of the city following violence in which a police station was attacked and vehicles burnt,” Commissioner of Police Sanjay Agarwal told IANS.
According to the police commissioner, journalists who reached the site to cover the incident were also attacked, reported NDTV.
IANS reported that a large crowd gathered at the police station and started to create ruckus. The mob pelted stones, torched rickshaws, and damaged police and other vehicles, The Times of India reported.
Police resorted to lathicharge and tear gas in a bid to control the mob.
The Times of India quoted Advocate Aslam Khan, a resident of the area, as saying that the violence broke out after police misbehaved with a senior citizen, prompting other residents to join the verbal spat, which then turned into a clash.
According to the report, the area was cordoned off and power supply to street lights were cut off to curb the violence.
