President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, officially making J&K and Ladakh Union Territories on Friday, 9 August.
Earlier in the day, the Ministry of External Affairs said that Pakistan's suspension of operation of the Samjhauta Express was "a unilateral decision", adding that it has been done without consulting India.
Meanwhile, after five days of a continued lockdown in the Valley post the Centre's decision to abrogate Article 370, DGP SP Vaid told AFP that the curfew will be eased for Friday prayers.

Rajya Sabha Passes Resolution Effectively Revoking Article 370
The government on Monday effectively revoked Article 370 which gave special status to the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir and moved a separate bill to bifurcate the state into two separate union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
“A historical wrong has been undone today. Article 35A came through the back door without following the procedure under Article 368 of the Constitution of India. It had to go,” Home Minister Amit Shah said while moving the bill.
"The decision of the government will help the people of Jammu and Kashmir the most. More investment, more industry, more private educational institutions, more jobs and more revenue will come," he said, adding that Kashmir's regional leaders now feel they would not be able to whip up the fake issue of 'sentiment verses benefit'.
President Ram Nath Kovind in "concurrence" with the "Jammu and Kashmir government" promulgated Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 2019 which states that provisions of the Indian Constitution are applicable in the state.
Pakistan Rejects India's Move, Calls It "Illegal"
Pakistan on Monday condemned and rejected the India’s move to effectively revoking Article 370 of the Constitution and vowed to exercise "all possible options" to counter India's "illegal" and "unilateral" step.
Reacting sharply to the government's announcement, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan termed the move as "illegal" and said it will "further deteriorate" relations between the nuclear-capable neighbours.
Pakistan Foreign Office summoned Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria and conveyed a "strong demarche on the announcements made and actions taken" by the Government of India over Jammu and Kashmir.
"The Foreign Secretary Sohail Mahmood conveyed Pakistan's unequivocal rejection of these illegal actions as they are in breach of international law and several UN Security Council resolutions," the FO said in a statement.
Article 370: US Urges All Stakeholders to Maintain Peace, Stability Along LoC
The US on Monday said it was "closely" observing the events in Jammu and Kashmir following the revocation of Article 370 of the Constitution by the Indian government and urged all stakeholders to maintain peace and stability along the Line of Control (LoC).
Without naming Pakistan, State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus told PTI, "We call on all parties to maintain peace and stability along the Line of Control." Pakistan has condemned and rejected the Indian government's move and vowed to exercise "all possible options" to counter, which it called, India's "illegal" and "unilateral" step.
Turkey Expresses Concerns Over India's Decision
Turkey expressed concern Monday that India's decision revoke Article 370, stating that it is likely to increase the prevailing tensions.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry, in a written statement, appealed that the problem be resolved within the framework of the relevant UN resolutions, through dialogue and by considering the legitimate interests of all Jammu and Kashmir people, Pakistan and India.
US-Based Muslim Body to Protest Scrapping of Article 370
A US-based Muslim advocacy group has announced it will hold a protest in front of the Indian Embassy here on Tuesday against the revoking of Article 370 of the Constitution.
The group Sound Vision, which claims to be North America's pioneering Muslim media organisation, said demonstrations will also be held outside Indian consulates in New York and Chicago The 28-year-old organisation, in a message to its supporters, said, "Tomorrow at noon, there will be rallies in front of the Indian embassies and consulates of the following cities in the United States."

China Expresses Concern Over J&K
Voicing serious concern over the situation in Kashmir, China on Tuesday asked India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and avoid actions that "unilaterally" change the status quo and exacerbate tensions between the two countries.
"China is seriously concerned about the current situation in Kashmir," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said in a written response.
"China's position on the Kashmir issue is clear and consistent. This issue is a legacy of history between India and Pakistan, which is also the consensus of the international community," Hua said, without directly referring to revocation of Article 370 by India.
"The parties concerned should exercise restraint and act with caution, especially to avoid actions that unilaterally change the status quo and exacerbate the tension," she said.
"We call on the two sides to peacefully resolve relevant disputes through dialogue and consultation and safeguard regional peace and stability”, she said.

The Bill was withdrawn because with the revocation of Article 370, the quota would anyway be applicable in J&K like other parts of the country and a separate Bill is no longer required for the same.

ABVP, TMCP Activists Clash Over Article 370 Celebrations
Activists of the ABVP and the student wing of the Trinamool Congress clashed in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday over celebration of the repeal of Article 370, the police said.
The incident occurred at Maynaguri College when activists of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) allegedly prevented those of the RSS student wing from bringing out a rally to celebrate the repeal of Article 370, triggering the clashes, a police officer said.
Three persons have been detained in connection with the incident, he said.

President Declares Abrogation of Provisions of Article 370 in J&K

'Kashmir Experiencing Unprecedented Lockdown': Ex-IAS Shah Faesal
Former IAS Officer Shah Faesal posted an update on the current situation in J&K, saying: “Kashmir is experiencing an unprecedented lockdown. From Zero Bridge to Airport, some movement of vehicles is visible. Other places are completely out of bounds. Except for patients or those with a curfew pass.”
“No violent incident has been officially reported so far. Random incidents of stone throwing were reported from Rambagh, Natipora, Downtown, Kulgam, Anantnag. But no news of any killings," he added.
UN Chief's Spokesperson Keeps Mum on Claims That India Violated UNSC Resolutions in Kashmir
A spokesperson for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has declined to comment on claims that scrapping of Jammu and Kashmir's special status by India is in violation of the Security Council resolutions, reiterating only that the UN chief is following the developments in the region with concern.
"I think we've expressed our… we said very clearly that we are following the developments in the region with concern. We…the Secretary General's position at this point is to urge all parties to exercise restraint,” Spokesman for the Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric said at the daily press briefing on Tuesday.
Over 100, Including Political Leaders, Arrested in Kashmir: Officials
Amid a communication shutdown and other restrictions, security agencies have arrested over 100 people, including political leaders and activists, as they were considered a threat to peace and tranquillity in the Kashmir valley, officials said on Wednesday, 7 August.
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah, who were under house arrest since Sunday night, were placed under arrest on Monday night as they were considered a threat to the law-and-order situation in the state, senior officials in the J&K administration said.
Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference leaders Sajjad Lone and Imran Ansari were also arrested, they added.
The arrested leaders were lodged at Hari Niwas, metres away from their Gupkar residences, the officials said.
Pak PM to Chair NSC Meeting to Discuss Kashmir Situation
Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has convened a second meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) in three days on Wednesday to discuss the current situation in Kashmir, officials said.
Official sources told PTI that the NSC will try to come up with a comprehensive policy to address the situation after India revoked special status of Kashmir.
The meeting is being held after the meeting of Corps Commanders and joint session of parliament on Tuesday.

Pak to Suspend Bilateral Trade, Downgrade Diplomatic Relations With India
Pakistan on Wednesday said it will downgrade diplomatic relations and suspend bilateral trade with India. It will also review bilateral arrangements with India.
The decision was taken at a crucial meeting of the National Security Committee (NSC) in Islamabad chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan and attended by top civil and military leadership, said a statement issued by the PM Office.
The NSC decided to review "bilateral arrangements" with India while taking the matter to the United Nations, including the Security Council, the statement said.
'Ending Autonomy of J&K Fans Flames of Existing Human Rights Crisis'
The Indian Government’s revocation of the autonomy and special status of Jammu and Kashmir violates the rights of representation and participation guaranteed to the people of J&K under the Indian Constitution and in international law, the International Commission of Jurists said on Tuesday.
The move is a blow to the rule of law and human rights in the state and in India, the ICJ further said.
“The Indian Government has pushed through these changes in contravention of domestic and international standards with respect to the rights of people in J&K to participate and be adequately represented, accompanied by draconian new restrictions on freedoms of expression, assembly, and travel, and with an influx of thousands of unaccountable security personnel,” said Sam Zarifi, ICJ’s Secretary General.

'No Nation Has Locus Standi on This': BJP's R Madhav on Pak Decision to Downgrade Bilateral Relations
Reacting to Pakistan's decision of downgrading bilateral relations with India, BJP leader R Madhav told reporters on Wednesday that Pakistan has no locus standi on the issue.
"The Indian Parliament had taken a decision about Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir, and that is an internal matter. No other nation has locus standi to react on this," Madhav reportedly said.
Restrictions in Kashmir To Be Relaxed for People to Participate in Eid-ul-Zuha
In a meeting on Wednesday evening, Governor Satya Pal Malik reviewed arrangements for enabling people to perform Friday prayers and for celebration of Eid-ul-Azha in the coming week.
Mandis will be set up at different locations in the Valley and ration shops, grocery and medicine stores have reportedly been asked to remain open on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
The Governor has also passed directions for setting up telephone lines in Deputy Commissioners’ offices for students (from J&K studying in other states) to talk to their families back home, ANI reported.
Capt Amarinder Expresses Concern Over Pak Decision to Downgrade Ties with India
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Wednesday expressed concern over Pakistan’s decision to downgrade diplomatic ties with India, saying "Islamabad’s reaction was knee-jerk and uncalled for".
Amarinder, however, hoped the move would not adversely impact the construction of the Kartarpur Corridor, ANI reported quoting the CMO's office.
UN Chief's Spokesperson Silent on Claims That India Violated UNSC Resolutions
A spokesperson for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has declined to comment on claims that scrapping of Jammu and Kashmir's special status by India is in violation of the Security Council resolutions, reiterating only that the UN chief is following the developments in the region with concern.
"I think we have expressed our… we said very clearly that we are following the developments in the region with concern. We…the Secretary General's position at this point is to urge all parties to exercise restraint," Secretary-General's spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday, PTI reported.

Pakistan Partially Closes Its Airspace
Pakistan on Wednesday partially closed its airspace. It will be closed from 6 August to 5 September between 2:45 am to 11 am everyday except on Sundays, ANI reported.
It closed a corridor in its airspace, which will result in an additional up to12 minutes of flying time for overseas flights, an Air India official said on Wednesday.
The flights will have to be diverted to other routes due to the closure, PTI reported.
"One air corridor has been closed (in Pakistani airspace), requiring a maximum of 12 minutes diversion. It will not affect us (much)," said the Air India spokesperson.
Air India operates around 50 flights daily through Pakistani airspace.

Pakistan Stops Samjhauta Express at Wagah, Passengers Stranded
Indian crew members and guard escorted the Samjhauta Express from Wagah border to Attari after Pakistan authorities stopped the train on their side, PTI reported on Thursday.
Pakistan had reportedly stopped the train at Wagah border claiming security concerns, and passengers were stranded briefly.
"When we received the information from the Pakistani authorities at around 2:14 pm, we assured them that there are no security concerns and the train should come here. However, we also told them that if necessary an Indian crew and guard will escort the train to Attari," a senior railway official told PTI.
As per the latest information, the Indian crew had moved the train from Wagah and it is expected to arrive at Attari shortly.

The UAE has advised its citizens to postpone travel to Jammu and Kashmir and asked those who are already there to follow the instructions of the local authorities, according to a media report.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MOFAIC) in a tweet on Wednesday said, "as a result of the current situation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation advises citizens to postpone travel to the state of Jammu and Kashmir for the time being, and calls upon those who are there to follow the instructions of local authorities."
'Kashmir is like a Concentration Camp': Congress's Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury

'Pak to Take India's Move on Kashmir To UNSC': Shah Mehmood Qureshi
Pakistan on Thursday announced that it would take the matter of India revoking special status for Jammu and Kashmir to the United Nations Security Council.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that the decision had been taken in light of several pre-existing UN resolutions on the Kashmir dispute, IANS reported, quoting Dawn newspaper.
The Minister said that Pakistan "rejected New Delhi's impression that scrapping Article 370 of the Indian Constitution was its internal matter" and called the "claim wrong from a historical, legal and moral perspective".

Protesters Detained for Defying Restrictions in Kargil
Several people were detained after they defied restrictions and took out a rally to protest against the revocation of Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, PTI reported quoting officials.
Defying restrictions imposed under Section 144 of the CrPC, over 300 people took out a rally in Kargil under the banner of Joint Action Committee.
Some of the people were reportedly detained after a minor clash broke out between police and protesters.
"We wanted a united state. Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir should be one entity. We are fighting for restoration of Article 370," PTI quoted former minister and NC leader Qamar Ali Akhoon as saying.
'Pakistan Airspace Remains Open for Indian Flights'
Pakistan on Thursday clarified that it has neither closed its airspace for India nor re-routed any route for the Indian flights.
"There has been no change to the notice to airmen (NOTAM) and all flights are being operated as per schedule issued earlier," Civil Aviation Authority Pakistan spokesperson Mujtaba Baig told PTI.
"Pakistan has neither closed its airspace for India nor re-routed or closed down any route for the Indian flights," he reportedly said.
Pakistan foreign office spokesperson Mohammad Faisal also said that Pakistan had not banned its airspace for India. “We have not banned our airspace for India. It is open for Indian flights,” he told reporters in Islamabad, according to PTI.

No Formal Word on Samjhauta, Train Now at Attari, Says India
After Pakistan announced it was "permanently discontinuing" the Samjhauta Express and the train with 110 passengers was stranded at its Wagah station, the Indian Railways brought the train to Attari in India after sending its locomotive and crew to the other side.
"An engine with the loco-pilot and other crew members were sent to Wagah border. The train left from Wagah (Pakistan) border after the security and custom clearance from the local authorities there and arrived at the Attari station at 5.15 pm,” Northern Railway spokesperson Deepak Kumar told IANS.
Earlier in the day, the Northern Railway official said that Pakistani authorities have not given any formal communication about the discontinuation of the train.
'Hope Admin Will Not Create Hurdles': Yechury on his Impending J&K Visit
CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury wrote to Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on Thursday, informing him of his "proposed" visit to Srinagar.
The letter came hours after Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad was stopped at the Srinagar airport and sent back.
"As the general secretary of a national party, I wish to visit Mohd. Yusuf Tarigami (who I was informed, is not keeping good health) and other members of my party. I propose to reach Srinagar on the 9th (August) morning to meet them. I hope the administration will not create any hurdles in discharging my responsibilities as a leader of my party," Yechury wrote in his letter.
All Govt Employees in J&K to Resume Their Duties with Immediate Effect
As per directions issued by Jammu and Kashmir's chief secretary, all government employees working at the divisional and district levels, and those serving in the civil secretariat at Srinagar, will have to report back to their duties with immediate effect, ANI reported on Thursday, quoting the J&K administration.
All the educational institutions, including government and private schools, shall re-open with effect from 9 August 2019, as per an order issued by the Samba district administration on Thursday.

US Says No Policy Change on Kashmir
The United States on Friday said that there is no change in its policy on Kashmir and called on India and Pakistan to maintain calm and restraint.
"No", replied State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus when asked by reporters if there has been any change in America's policy on Kashmir, PTI reported.
The US policy has been that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan and it is up to the two countries to decide on the pace and scope of the talks on the issue.
"And if there was, I certainly wouldn't be announcing it here, but no, there's not," Ortagus said in response to a follow up question.

The Samjhauta Express which was stopped at the Wagah border by Pakistani authorities on Thursday, 8 August, reached Delhi station at 8 am on Friday, four-and-a-half hours behind schedule, reported PTI.
The train that runs between Indian and Pakistan came with 117 passengers, including 48 Pakistanis, it said.
On Thursday, hundreds of passengers from both sides of the border were stuck for several hours waiting for security clearances following the disruption in the train service that connects Delhi and Lahore.
Pakistan's Federal Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed told the media in Islamabad on Thursday that Pakistan has closed the Samjhauta Express train service with India.
However, railway officials here said the train has not been suspended.
Kashmir Issue Should Not Be Linked to Afghanistan: Taliban
The Taliban on Thursday, 8 August, said the India-Pakistan rift over Kashmir should not be linked with the situation in Afghanistan.
"Linking the issue of Kashmir with that of Afghanistan by some parties will not aid in improving the crisis at hand because the issue of Afghanistan is not related nor should Afghanistan be turned into the theatre of competition between other countries," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed said in a statement, reported Anadolu news agency.
Kashmir Curfew to be Eased For Friday Prayers
After five days of continued lockdown in Jammu and Kashmir, DGP Shesh Paul Vaid told AFP that the curfew will be eased for Friday prayers.
However, there will be no Friday congregation at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar.
The move comes after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval directed authorities to ensure that no Kashmiris were harassed, officials told PTI.
The officials clarified that people will be allowed to offer prayers in mosques located in their locality.
Qureshi Visiting China to Discuss Indo-Pak Tensions
Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Friday, 8 August, dashed to China to discuss with the Chinese leadership Indo-Pak tensions after India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
Qureshi told the media before embarking on the visit to China that India was trying to destroy the regional peace with its unconstitutional measures and Pakistan will take Chinese leadership into confidence, Geo News reported.
"China is not only a friend to Pakistan but also an important country of the region...I will apprise the Chinese leaders of the unconstitutional measures taken up by the Indian government in Kashmir. I will also brief them of the gross human rights violations...," he said.
Sitaram Yechury, D Raja Detained at Srinagar Airport
CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yecury said he and his CPI colleague D Raja were detained at the Srinagar airport on Friday, 9 August and denied entry into the city.
The Left leaders had gone to the Srinagar to meet their party colleagues.
"They showed us a legal order which did not allow any entry into Srinagar. It stated that even escorted movement int the city was not permitted due to security reasons. We are still trying to negotiate with them," Yechury told PTI over the phone.
Yechury and CPI general secretary Raja had written to Satya Pal Malik on Thursday informing him of their visit and requesting him to facilitate their entry.
NSA Doval Visits Srinagar, Meets Locals and CRPF Personnel
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval visited Srinagar on Friday and spent over 2 hours in the area, reported ANI. He interacted with troops and locals and also had lunch with CRPF personnel.

A day after Pakistan suspended the operation of Samjhauta Express between New Delhi and Attari, the Ministry of External Affairs on Friday, called it a "unilateral decision" and said it has urged the neighbouring country to "reconsider" it.

J&K Cong Expressed 'Serious Concern', Asks Govt to Release Political Leaders
The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) has expressed serious concern over the detention of senior party functionaries by the state administration and demanded their immediate release, a spokesperson said on Friday, according to PTI.
Senior party leaders Saifuddin Soz, Peerzada Mohd Sayeed, Haji Abdul Rashid Dar, Gulam Nabi Monga, Farooq Andrabi, Mohd Amin Bhat, Gular Ahmad Wani and others have been placed under house arrest since the midnight of 4 August, the JKPCC said in a statement.
The party sought immediate release of its leaders, while cautioning the government that illegal detention of political leaders won't address the problems in the state.

Petition Filed in SC Against Presidential Order Effectively Revoking Article 370
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against the Presidential Order by which Article 370 was scrapped in Jammu and Kashmir, and also sought direction to declare it illegal and unconstitutional, ANI reported.

Jammu & Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik on Friday, said he visited various hospitals and public places in the state and reviewed the availability of basic amenities.

J&K Govt Shifts 20 More 'Troublemakers' From Kashmir to Agra Jail
The Jammu and Kashmir authorities airlifted a fresh batch of 20 "potential troublemakers" from Srinagar to Agra, officials said on Friday.
The people, who have a history of being involved in separatist activities, were taken out of Kashmir Valley in a special Indian Air Force plane, they said.
They are alleged to be active members of separatist groups in Kashmir Valley.
They were taken in a special IAF plane to Uttar Pradesh and lodged in Agra Central Jail, PTI reported.
