1. Gardener Kills Goa Artist Shireen Mody, Dies While Fleeing

Acclaimed artist Shireen Mody and her gardner were found dead after a scuffle between the two on Sunday, in which the gardener attacked Mody with an iron rod leading to her death, police said. The artist was 65.

The gardener, identified as Praful Jana, attempted to flee the scene but suffered a head injury as he was scaling a wall. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Jana is a native of Assam.

Mody, who had set up a studio in Arpora, a village located next to the Calangute beach and around 12 kilometres from the state capital Panaji, died in Goa Medical College and Hospital, where she was taken by her neighbours.

2. Man Kills Girlfriend Over Her ‘Character’, Tries to Kill Self

Suspecting the ‘character’ of his girlfriend, a 24-year-old man allegedly strangled her to death at a hotel in Santacruz here before trying to commit suicide by jumping before a running truck, police said on Sunday, 6 October.

The incident took place on Saturday.

The accused, Vijay Kumar Harijan, who suffered fractures in his leg during his suicide bid and was admitted to a hospital, has been booked by the Vakola police for the alleged murder, an official said.

“The accused and his girlfriend, Sandhya Harijan (22), had checked into Kishish Kunj Hotel located on Golibar Road in Santacruz East at 1.30 pm,” the official said.

3. UP Man Killed in Encounter, MP Wants CBI Probe

Hours after a police inspector was allegedly attacked by a 25-year-old man accused of illegal mining, police said the latter was killed in an encounter in Jhansi early Sunday, 6 October.

However, SP’s Rajya Sabha MP Chandrapal Singh Yadav called the encounter fake and demanded registration of murder charges and a CBI inquiry.

Police claimed the deceased, Pushpendra Yadav, was killed in the encounter while his brother Ravindra and associate Nitin managed to escape. Inspector Dharmendra Singh Chauhan, SHO of Moth police station, was admitted to Jhansi Medical College, after a bullet grazed his chin.

4. Man Dies in Fight Over Pending Dues, 3 Held

A fight between two families in west Delhi’s Raghubir Nagar near Rajouri Garden over pending payment led to the death of a 19-year-old man on Saturday night, 5 October. The man’s father was also injured in the fight.

On Sunday, police arrested three members of the family that attacked the man-son duo. The arrested men were identified as Shiv Charan and his two sons, Sushil and Anit alias Guddu. They were booked under murder charges, a case regarding which was registered at the Rajouri Garden police station.

Deputy commissioner of police (west) Deepak Purohit said that on Saturday night they received the distress call. A police team reached a shop at Raghubir Nagar and learnt that there was a quarrel between two groups.

5. Municipality Chairman Booked for Abusing, Beating up Sweeper in Rajasthan

The municipality chairman of Sangod in Rajasthan’s Kota district has been booked for allegedly abusing and beating up a sweeper, who was carting away a cow’s carcass by dragging it with a tractor-trailer, police said on Sunday, 6 October.

The municipality chairman, Devkinandan Rathore, was booked under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on Saturday for beating up and abusing contractual sweeper Rajkumar Valmiki, said Station House Officer (SHO) Dhanraj Meena.

Police have launched an investigation into the matter and recorded the statements of Valmiki and the eye witnesses, the SHO said, adding that no arrest had been made so far.

6. Three Detained in Rajasthan for Harassing Minor Dalit Girl, Cousin

Police have detained three people after a video, in which they are seen harassing a minor girl and her cousin, surfaced on social media in Rajasthan’s Karauli district on Saturday, 5 October.

In the video, the accused can be seen forcibly trying to remove the clothes of the girl and also roughing up her companion, who are said to be Dalits.

Police said the incident took place around 10-15 days ago. “After the video surfaced on social media, we instructed the SHOs of all police stations in the district to identify the victims and the accused. We learnt that the girl and the man are cousins,” said Karauli SP Anil Kumar Beniwal.

7. Man Lynched in Jharkhand Over Child-Lifting Rumour

A 32-year-old daily wage labourer succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, 5 October, a day after a mob allegedly thrashed him after suspecting him of being a child lifter at Koderma in Jharkhand, his family said even as the state police said that their preliminary probe suggested that he was beaten up for alleged theft.

Koderma’s sub-divisional police officer, Rajendra Prasad, cited the investigation and said it suggested it was not a case of lynching over child lifting rumours as the family of the labourer, Sunil Yadav, has claimed.

“However, it is true that the victim [Sunil Yadav] was beaten up by residents of a [Koderma] locality after he was caught red-handed committing a theft,’’ he said. He added that police have filed a case on the complaint lodged by the labourer’s brother, Dilip Yadav. “Investigation has already commenced. We are waiting for the postmortem report,” said Prasad.

8. Man Thrashed, His Wife Harassed for Not Saying ‘Ram-Ram’ in Alwar

Two drunken youths allegedly attacked a man and tried to strip his wife at the central bus stand in Alwar on Saturday night, 5 October, because the couple, belonging to a minority community, refused to say ‘Ram-Ram’ as ordered by the accused. The plight of the couple drew a crowd of locals, who thrashed the duo — Vansh Bharadwaj and Surendra Bhatia — and handed them over to police.

According to the complainant, the incident took place when the couple and their child were having dinner before taking a bus back to Nuh in Haryana. Bharadwaj and Bhatia, both drunk, appeared on the scene and started making derogatory comments about the minority community. They allegedly said while the minority community resided in India, they refused to take Lord Ram’s name.

9. Homebuyer Duped of Rs 4 Lakh by ‘Neta’s Kin’

A man has been arrested for allegedly duping a homebuyer of Rs 4 lakh by claiming to be a relative of a Union minister, the police said on Sunday, 6 October.

An official said Suneet Ratna Preetam Athawale (38) handed over fake documents of a flat built by Mhada to the complainant, Hakeem Saleem Shah, after taking Rs 4 lakh.

The accused prepared a bogus letter of allotment of a house in Borivli by forging the signature of Mhada president Uday Samant and gave it to Shah. “When Shah reached the flat, he saw someone else staying there. He spoke to a friend who works for Mhada and learnt that the letter of allotment was fake. Athawale then stopped taking Shah’s calls after which the latter filed a complaint about being duped of Rs 4 lakh,” said an official from Vakola police station.
