Narendra Modi's ongoing visit to Israel – the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister – seems to have provided fake news websites a golden opportunity to spread misinformation with the supposed objective of making Indians “feel proud”.

As pointed out by fake news debunking site SM Hoax Slayer, a photoshopped image of the Israeli Parliament, the Knesset, showing the Indian flag alongside that of Israel has been doing the rounds on social media. The original one shows only the Israel flag atop the building, and was reportedly clicked by James Emery.

The picture is accompanied by text reading, “First time in Israeli history, they waved an Indian flag on their Parliament roof before arrival of PM Modi. Feel proud to share."

The picture was shared by the popular fake news website Postcard News as well as an outlet going by the name of 'The Youth', which describes itself as “a team of three aggressive nationalist students” on its Facebook page.

Their misleading posts on Facebook have got considerable traction, with the one shared by The Youth having already garnered more than 2,000 shares.

Now, these websites need to be told that NOT peddling fake news can actually go a long way in making us “feel proud”.
