3. Garbage Piles at Banjara Hills' JVR Park, Leave Walkers Disgusted

People generally visit a park to have a quiet time, to immerse in nature and the fresh air, and return home refreshed and relaxed. But not those who visit this particular park in Banjara Hills.

The Jalagam Vengal Rao (JVR) park, which interestingly is adopted by none other than GHMC Commissioner Dana Kishore himself, is in such bad condition that morning walkers were left puking while some returned home sick. This was the situation at the Jalagam Vengal Rao (JVR) park on early hours of Thursday, 13 December, when the pond located inside it turned into a stinking cess pool of sewage, causing inconvenience to the visitors and walkers.

“For the last four months, the stench has been a cause of concern for us which is a serious discomfort. It is strange that despite being in Banjara Hills, the pond continues to be stinking. In fact it is more acute in the mornings,” lamented T Sami Reddy, president of JVR walkers association.

The main reason for the unbearable smell, locals say, is the direct inflow of sewerage water into the pond.

5. Just 15 More Days to Save KBR National Park

Environmentalists are on their toes as there is just 15 days to go for submitting objections against a Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) draft notification on revising the dimensions of the eco sensitive zone at KBR National Park.

The draft notification released on 30 October proposes the reduction of the walkway around the national park to up to just 3 metres at some stretches from its present width of 25-35 metres.

If the MoEF does not receive any objection within sixty days of publication of draft notification, it will be published as final. The draft notification which was published on the MoEF’s website failed to catch the media’s attention amid the high-decibel election rhetoric that ended on Tuesday, 11 December.

6. Talk with Admin Fail, Hyd’s TISS Students Continue Protest, Boycotting Classes

With the administration not relenting to the demands of the students of Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) Hyderabad, the latter have continued protesting and boycotting classes for the fifth day on Friday, 14 December.

On Thursday, the students and the Deputy Director of TISS had a discussion regarding the administration's decision to remove a Bachelor of Arts (BA) course and to make the campus non-residential from the next academic year. However, as the talks failed, the students vowed to intensify their protest.

The students demanded that the main administration from Mumbai should intervene in the issue and pay heed to the concerns of the students. Krishnanath, a student, said, “We submitted a charter of demand, asking the administration to reintroduce the BA programme and make the hostel residential. If the management wants to provide private accommodation, the students should be a part of the decision-making.”
