In Hyderabad’s Humayun Nagar, police constable Bheem Rao braved all odds to rescue 20 people stuck inside a building that had caught fire, on Monday.

Rao was alerted by locals, but by the time he reached the site, the fire had spread from the first to the second floor, as reported by The Times of India.

When the fire broke out, residents on higher floors started moving upstairs instead of coming down. I had to run after them to bring them down. There were also many elderly people stuck inside the building who were not that agile. When I heard them scream and shout, I rushed to their flats and started pulling them out. After that, I began carrying them downstairs to safety.

The area’s corporator Ayesha Rubina said, “Fortunately, the constable moved the gas cylinders in the kitchen and he saved a few more people living in buildings around it.”

Rao had joined the force in 2009 and had recently been transferred to Humayun Nagar police station. His deed caught the eye of the municipal administration and Urban Minister K Tarak Rama Rao, who tweeted to the DGP Anurag Sharma, urging him to recognise the brave act.
