A 17-year-old girl was set on fire allegedly by a spurned lover on Sunday, 29 July in Alamnagar area of Uttar Pradesh.

Circle officer Abhishek Pandey told PTI on Monday that the accused, identified as Zahid Ansari, allegedly barged into the house of the minor and set her ablaze after dousing her with kerosene.

The survivor gave the accused a chase in an attempt to catch him but lost her consciousness as the flames engulfed her, Pandey added.

According to the police the girl suffered 80 percent burns and was rushed to a local hospital and then referred to another hospital in Varanasi. The accused often teased the girl, he said.

A case has been lodged against Zahid Ansari and efforts are being made to arrest him, added Pandey.
