Amid the drama that prevailed in Maharashtra, many important news stories did not get the attention they deserved.
The BJP-NCP government took charge in Maharashtra on Saturday, 23 November, after the President's rule, imposed in the state about a fortnight ago, was revoked at 5.47 am. BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis and NCP’s Ajit Pawar took oath as the chief minister and deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, respectively.
Amid all the drama that prevailed in Maharashtra, however, many important news events and stories did not get the attention they deserved.
Here are five noteworthy stories from Saturday, 23 November, that got overshadowed by the Maharashtra twist:
1. Kanhaiya, Yogendra Yadav, Umar Khalid Join March Against Fee Hike
Amid chants demanding to make education affordable for all, hundreds took to the streets in Delhi on Saturday in support of the students' protest against the hostel fee hike in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).
The march was joined by the likes of Yogendra Yadav, founder of Swaraj Abhiyan, and former JNU students and activists Umar Khalid and Kanhaiya Kumar.
The protesters gathered at the Mandi House and started marching towards the Parliament amid the presence of a huge police posse. Police personnel blocked roads leading to Connaught Place to prevent traffic snarls.
2. RSS Defamation Case: Maharashtra Court Rejects Rahul Gandhi’s Plea
A court in Mumbai on Saturday rejected the applications of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury seeking dismissal of a defamation complaint filed by an RSS worker, PTI reported.
The duo will now face trial in the case.
RSS activist and advocate Dhrutiman Joshi had filed the complaint seeking initiation of defamation proceedings against Gandhi and Yechury for allegedly linking the Sangh to the killing of journalist Gauri Lankesh.
Lankesh was shot dead in Bengaluru in 2017.
3. Listen to People’s Needs: PM Tells Guvs, Lt Guvs
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday asked governors and lieutenant governors to listen to the needs of the people and work towards upliftment of the underprivileged sections of the society.
He made these remarks at a conference of governors and lieutenant governors here.
He also made a special mention of healthcare, education and tourism sectors where there were new opportunities waiting to be harnessed for job generation and the betterment of the poor and downtrodden – a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office said.
4. Pope Francis Arrives in Japan to Preach Anti-Nuclear Message
Pope Francis arrived in Japan on Saturday where he is expected to deliver a robust anti-nuclear message of peace in the only country to have suffered an atomic bomb attack.
The 82-year-old Argentine is fulfilling a long-cherished ambition to preach in Japan, where years ago he hoped to be a missionary.
He arrived in Tokyo in heavy rain and high winds, the white cape of his papal outfit blowing up around his face as he stepped gingerly down the staircase from the Thai Airways plane that carried him from the first stop of his tour in Thailand.
5. 12 Killed as Mini Bus Overturns in Rajasthan’s Nagaur
Twelve persons were killed and 10 others injured when the mini bus they were travelling in overturned in a bid to save a bull in Nagaur district of Rajasthan on Saturday, 23 November.
The accident occurred early in the morning, police said, adding that the victims were on their way to Hisar in Haryana from Maharashtra's Latur.
A bull suddenly came in the middle of the highway, forcing the driver to apply sudden breaks, but he could not control the vehicle which overturned.
Twelve persons, including six women, were killed in the incident and 10 injured. Four of the injured persons were admitted to the SMS hospital in Jaipur in a critical condition, while the remaining six were being treated at a Nagaur hospital, the police said.
