ONGC Mumbai Plant Fire: 1 Staffer, 3 CISF Personnel Killed

No impact has been reported on oil processing. Gas has been diverted to Hazira Plant.

Four people were killed and three were injured after a massive fire broke out at the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation's (ONGC) plant in the Navi Mumbai township of Maharashtra on Tuesday, 3 September.

The company expressed its condolences over the loss of lives in a tweet.

The deceased included three CISF fire personnel Eranna Nayakka, Satish Prasad Kushwaha and MK Paswan, who were trying to stop the gas leakage, as well as the resident ONGC production superintendent CN Rao, CISF's Deputy Inspector General (west zone) Nilima Singh said. The victims died in a blast while they were trying to check a gas leak at the site, PTI reported.

The blaze erupted around 7 am in the gas processing plant of ONGC located in Uran area of neighbouring Navi Mumbai, an official said.

"Fire broke out in storm water drainage in Uran Plant early morning successfully doused within two hours by fire fighting team. ONGC’s robust crisis mitigation preparedness helped put off this major fire in a very short time," the ONGC said in a tweet.

“...Fire is being contained. No impact on Oil processing. Gas diverted to Hazira Plant. Situation is being assessed," the ONGC had earlier said on Twitter.

Nearly 22 fire brigade tenders, including that of ONGC, the Navi Mumbai civic body and other agencies, were at the spot, the police official said,according to PTI.

The injured persons were admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment, he said. The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, he added.
