Ummer Fayaz, a 22-year-old lieutenant, was allegedly abducted by militants in Shopian on 9 May. His body was found the following morning, riddled with bullet holes.

Fayaz, the only son of an apple farmer, became the first person from South Kashmir’s Kulgam to get into the National Defence Academy. He was visiting Shopian to attend a wedding, when he was abducted and killed.

A candlelight march was held at India Gate on 13 May, to pay tribute to the slain soldier. Hundreds came out to pay homage to the young Kashmiri Army man.
