Ex-coal secretary HC Gupta who has been accused in eight coal scam cases moved to court on Tuesday seeking cancellation of his bail as he said couldn’t bear the financial burden of litigation. He has sought to withdraw his personal bond submitted for his release on bail. He wants to face trial from inside jail.

Special coal scam court asked Gupta the second time on Wednesday if he needed legal aid and recommended appointment of Amicus Curiea to assist him. He refused the offer saying he will fight his own case.

The Special Court will hear the case on 19 August now.

He also did not wish to examine any witness in his defence, he said. Special judge Bharat Parashar had given time to Gupta to “think over” his plea and asked CBI to respond to his petition by Wednesday.

Gupta even earlier had refused the court’s offer to provide him with advocate services.

Gupta’s application was over an alleged coal scam case involving Madhya Pradesh-based Kamal Sponge Steel and Power Ltd (KSSPL) and others.

Earlier, the court had granted bail to Gupta but in May, the court dismissed Gupta’s plea seeking joint trial in several cases against him, saying all the matters were at different stages.
