Two security personnel were injured and one civilian was killed when an encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Thursday.

Nazir Sheikh, a local driver who was ferrying the Army patrol party which was attacked by terrorists, succumbed to his injuries.

Earlier on Thursday, a massive search operation was launched in Shopian, involving 4,000 army and CRPF personnel, to flush out militants holed up inside homes.

There were reports of an encounter in Kulgam district where an army patrol party was attacked.

Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in Khudwani area of Kulgam district, 75 kms from Srinagar, following information about the presence of three to four militants there, an army official said.

As the security forces were closing in on the militants, they opened fire.

"The cordon has been strengthened to prevent the militants from escaping," the official said.

More details are awaited.
