Empty Grenade Found at Bengaluru Railway Station, Search Ongoing

A grenade-like object was found at Platform 1 of Majestic Railway Station around 8:45 am on Friday morning, 31 May, during morning patrolling near the railway lines. While it was soon determined to be a non-explosive device posing no threat, intensive security measures were immediately put into place.

Police and Government Railway Personnel present at the spot swung into action by cordoning off the area, taking the object away to a safe place and conducting thorough searches of the surrounding platforms, trains, entrances and exits etc. The grenade was handed over to the bomb disposal squad around 10 am for further inspection and tests.

The railway workforce has been put on high alert but normal operations have been restored, confirmed a statement by South Western Railways authorities.

“Today morning when our policemen were doing patrolling, one railway employee found the metal object near the railway line. Police and GRP immediately checked the object, it was found to be a round-shaped object. The bomb disposal squad was immediately called and they are looking at what exactly this object is.”

He also added that a beeping sounding was heard at the same time to be coming from the Sangamitra Express that was at the platform, but investigations revealed that it was a CCTV malfunction and had nothing to do with the hand-grenade shell found. The train too was checked and declared safe.

A statement from the South Western Railways read that senior Railway Officers including Divisional Railway Manager, Bengaluru reached the spot immediately while the search operation was led by Divisional Security Commissioner.

The train movement proceeded as normal, except for those on platforms one and two. After thorough checking, these have been restored as well, said the Railways statement. Intensive checks at the entrance, platforms, train coaches and parcel office are being conducted.
