CLAIM

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal celebrated his birthday despite former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s demise.

BACKGROUND

On 16 August, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that owing to the critical health condition of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the flood situation in Kerala, he will not be celebrating his birthday.

However, late in the evening, a picture of the Delhi chief minister cutting a cake surfaced on the internet with many people slamming the AAP’s national convener for celebrating his birthday while the nation was mourning.

VERDICT: TRUE OR FALSE?

The picture is true however it has been taken out of context.

AAP’s social media strategist Ankit Lal in a Facebook post claimed that the pictures were taken in the morning when party workers, MLA’s and Kejriwal’s friends came to wish him for his birthday.

Lal admits that Kejriwal did cut a cake but not in the evening like it is being claimed by people on social media.

According to him, party workers met Kejriwal at 8 am which was when he cut a cake with them. However, later in the day when a medical bulletin was released by AIIMS that mentioned Vajpayee’s worsening health condition, Kejriwal decided not to celebrate his birthday.
