Diwali, one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals is round the corner. The markets are decorated, Diwali melas are luring crowds for mandatory festive shopping and there’s a distinct gleam in the air. The festival of lights which is also a celebration and anticipation of prosperity kickstarts with Dhanteras Puja.
Dhanteras is usually celebrated on triodasi of the Krishna Paksha (the propitious 13th lunar day of the Krishna paksha of the month of Kartik). The festival is also marked by auspicious shopping ranging from gold and silver to utensils. Dhanteras surely sets the mood for the prolonged 5-day festivities.

People usually adorn their homes with lights and diyas from Dhanteras itself. Rangolis are made on this day which go until the day of Deepawali. Several people also buy idols of Ganesh-Lakshmi on Dhanteras to be worshipped on Diwali day. All the preparations to worship and welcome Goddess Lakshmi are set in motion on this day itself.
Some people also worship the seven cereals including barely, wheat, urad, gram, moong and masoor on Dhanteras Puja.
