West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, during a media briefing on Tuesday, said she felt “insulted, threatened and humiliated” after her telephonic spat with Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi over the prevailing communal tension at Baduria in North 24 Parganas.

Banerjee told reporters that she was so offended she thought about stepping down from her post as CM.

On 5 July, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Derek O’ Brien lashed out at Tripathi over his “unacceptable language”. The Raj Bhavan has turned into “RSS Shaakha,” he said.

He even asked for the removal of Tripathi as the Governor. “Article 156 of Constitution states, President can remove Governor, after this incident, worth considering asking Governor to leave,” he said.

A statement from Raj Bhawan quoted Tripathi as having said nothing happened during the talks and that he asked the Chief Minister to maintain law and order by all means.

Communal clashes have broken out in North 24 Paraganas district over an “objectionable” post on Facebook, prompting the state government to rush 400 troops of paramilitary BSF to assist the police in containing the situation.
