As Nine More Die, Assam Japanese Encephalitis Toll Rises to 110

The Japanese Encephalitis death toll in Assam since the beginning of this month rose to 110 with nine more casualties being reported in the last three days, according to a National Health Mission (NHM) bulletin in Guwahati on Tuesday, 23 July.

The nine Japanese Encephalitis (JE) deaths were reported from Goalpara, Sonitpur, Barpeta, Dhubri, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar districts.

“Goalpara district reported three deaths, Sonitpur two, while Barpeta, Dhubri, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar district reported one death each,” the bulletin said, as per PTI.

The number of Japanese Encephalitis positive cases in the state since the beginning of this month climbed to 477 with 38 new cases being registered in the last three days, the bulletin added.

The NHM bulletin also said that the cumulative figure for JE/AES (Acute Encephalitis Syndrome) deaths in the state since January this year is 214, while the number of JE/AES-positive cases during this period stands at 1,518

Measures to control the mosquito-borne disease which affects the brain continue to be taken across the state, which is currently undergoing a transmission season for Japanese Encephalitis, NHM sources said.

Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the emergency measures taken to combat the JE/AES situation will be there till 30 September.
