Kolkata Locals Protest Against Mob That Thrashed Hugging Couple

In a bid to moral police the couple, an angry mob dragged them off the metro at Dum Dum station and flogged them.

A couple was harassed and beaten up in Kolkata for hugging each other inside a metro compartment, reported Anandabazar Patrika, quoting an eye witness.

The eyewitness, Ujjwal Chakraborty, said that the couple were being harassed and asked questions for hugging in public. From “Why aren’t you going to a pub in Park Street?” to “Why don’t you get a room?”, a range of such insulting questions were hurled at the couple, Chakraborty wrote.

After a heated argument that turned to threats, the couple was dragged off the metro at the Dum Dum station and flogged by a mob of middle-aged to elderly people, according to ABP.

The boy was kicked, punched and pushed and when the girl tried to save him, she received a few blows as well, the report stated.

Later, other passengers from an adjacent compartment alighted to help the couple and save them from the unhinged mob.

Locals Demand Action, Stage Protest

Later on Tuesday, locals staged a protest outside the Dum Dum station, demanding the arrest of people who had reportedly beaten up the couple.

A couple hugs in public to protest Tuesday’s incident where a mob allegedly attacked a boy and a girl for hugging.

Several youngsters came out to support the couple that was harassed and later dragged off the metro in Kolkata.

The identity of the couple is unknown, and no police complaint has been filed in the case yet.
