Even as the state government on Wednesday claimed that Madras High Court appointed Special Officer A G Pon Manickavel of Idol Wing CID had filed a contempt of court petition against top government officials only to continue in the post even after completion of his one year tenure on 30 November, the court wanted to know the number of cases in which the officer had wrapped up investigation and filed charge sheets in the last one year.
Justices R Mahadevan and P D Audikesavalu called for the details from the Special Officer since it was his claim that his team’s functions were crippled and he was not allowed to investigate cases freely. They directed him to submit the details by Monday and asked Additional Advocate General Balaji Srinivasan also to put in writing the assistance that had been provided to the Special Officer in the last one year and the funds allocated for his functioning.

20 November 2019 is celebrated as the International Children’s Day. It was on this date, 30 years ago, since the United Nations General Assembly adopted the historic Convention on the Rights of the Child, which is the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world, that recognised children as individuals with their own rights.
Commemorating this feat, the UNICEF Chennai chapter, put together a compendium of 30 child heroes from various parts of Tamil Nadu, who have championed against all odds to fight for their right to education.
On a night when French actor Isabelle Huppert won a Lifetime Achievement Award and Amitabh Bachchan’s very presence drew loud cheers, the loudest appreciation at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Goa was reserved for a Tamil actor, Superstar Rajinikanth, who was given the Icon of Golden Jubilee Award on the 50th edition of IFFI, Goa.
Notably, this is the first time this award is being handed out at IFFI. On a fairly understated evening in which Shankar Mahadevan drew gasps of admiration with his super-fast rendition of his famous track, Breathless, it was the occasional mention of Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan in the speeches of government dignitaries that served to heighten excitement.

Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu, as well as the ruling AIADMK’s alliance partner, the BJP, slammed the State government after it issued an ordinance for holding indirect elections to the posts of Mayors of Corporations and Chairpersons of Municipalities and Town Panchayats.
DMK president MK Stalin alleged that the AIADMK government had taken the decision in a “dictatorial manner”. In a statement, he said holding indirect elections was tantamount to the Chief Minister admitting the AIADMK’s defeat in the local body elections. “He has realised that the people will reject the AIADMK candidates for the posts of Mayors and Chairpersons of Municipalities and Town Panchayats. The ruling party is in chaos over the conduct of the local body polls,” Stalin said.
