1. CB-CID Busts International Call Racket

The Crime Branch-CID of the Tamil Nadu Police on Thursday conducted a joint raid along with telecom officials and busted a tower set-up used to make illegal international calls.

According to an official release, investigators searched the premises of DRAV Telecommunications at Thangam Colony in Anna Nagar West. It was found the set-up routed calls through Voice Over Internet Protocol to connect foreign calls as local traffic. It offered prices much lower than the local service providers thereby causing a revenue loss to the government. Muppiri Reddy and four of his employees were arrested. The system was dismantled and gadgets, 1,500 SIM cards and foreign currency were seized.

2. Students Execute Surety Bond

Seven students from Pachaiyappa’s college, including an alumnus, were made to execute a surety bond by the city police after allegedly creating nuisance in the bus they were travelling in. The students signed a bond that stated that they won’t commit mistakes of this nature again, police said.

The Kilpauk police let the boys off after a stern warning, after they sang songs and created ruckus, inconveniencing passengers in a public bus.  The Chennai City Police recently issued a statement, asking public to inform them of any incidents of vandalism, nuisance or attacks by students through their official social media accounts.

3. HC Deletes Remarks on Misuse of Laws

Move follows stiff opposition from a section of lawyers.  

The Madras High Court on Thursday deleted from a recent judgment its observations regarding widespread misuse of women-centric laws. The decision was taken following stiff opposition to the remarks made by the court from a section of lawyers, led by designated senior counsel R Vaigai.

Acceding to a written representation signed by as many as 64 lawyers, Justice S Vaidyanathan directed the High Court Registry to delete the observations from his verdict, and issue a fresh copy of the verdict. This was the second time in the last two days that the judge had deleted his observations from the same judgment. On Tuesday, he had deleted another observation made against Christian missionaries and the educational institutions run by them.

4. Youth Gets Five Years in Jail for Sexually Assaulting a Six-Year-Old

Three years after a six-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a 24-year-old man near Thiruvanmiyur, a Mahila court here sentenced the man to undergo five years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000.

Considering the physical and mental health of the victim, the court awarded the victim Rs 25,000 as compensation to be paid by the state from the victim compensation fund. According to Special Public Prosecutor L Srilekha, the convict, P Narendra, an electrician, on 5 December 2016, sexually assaulted the girl by kissing and touching her inappropriately. The victim’s family lived in a row house close to where the convict was running an electronics shop.

5. Road Roko Attempt Foiled

The leaders and cadre assembled at the Sathyamurthy Bhavan and attempted to move towards Anna Salai.

Scores of Congressmen who tried to stage a road roko near Sathyamurthy Bhavan, protesting the arrest of senior party leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media case, were detained by the police on Thursday morning. They were released in the evening. TNCC president K S Alagiri had given the call for protests in all districts. In Chennai, former TNCC presidents Kumari Anandan and M Krishansamy took part in the protest.

The leaders and cadre assembled at the Sathyamurthy Bhavan and attempted to move towards Anna Salai to stage the protest. They were arrested by the police. Alagiri, Congress Legislature Party leader K R Ramasamy and Congress MPs were in Delhi to express solidarity with Chidambaram.
