1. Tributes Pour in for the Man Who Spoke His Mind
The roads leading to Alagirisamy Salai in KK Nagar were crowded throughout the day as people from different walks of life made a beeline to writer’s Gnani’s house to pay their last respects.
On hearing the news of his death, members of the film fraternity, political leaders, members of theatre groups, journalists, friends and relatives paid homage to the man who had inspired and guided many.
Actors Rajinikanth, Manobala and Rajesh, and director Vasanth paid tribute.

2. Protests Continue Against Vairamuthu
Hundreds of people, including actors and spiritual leaders, gathered near the State Guest House on Wallajah Road on Monday evening condemning film lyricist Vairamuthu's recent remarks on Andal.
The protest was organised under the banner, Long Live Hindu Dharma, and was held for over two hours from 4 pm. Actor Visu, Kutti Padmini, S Ve Shekar, several Jeeyars (Vaishnavite pontiffs), Hindu Munani leader Rama Gopalan and others participated in the protest.

3. Tempest in Tamil Creates a Big Wave at Urur Olcott Vizha
With water as the theme, the Bard’s play The Tempest was refreshingly retold with local flavour and relevance.
The play, a Tamil adaptation of William Shakespeare’s comedy was presented by Crea Shakthi as part of Urur Olcott Kuppam Vizha 2018. The play was a political satire set in December 2015 when the city was hit by floods. From disaster management to corruption in politics to oppression of women, it brought out a host of issues crippling the society.

4. Drones to Monitor Beaches in Chennai
The Chennai City Police are making elaborate security arrangements in view of the huge crowd expected to throng the Marina Beach on the day of ‘Kaanum Pongal’ on Tuesday. More than 2,000 police personnel will be involved in the security duty to prevent any untoward incident on the beach.
A senior police officer said the personnel would be posted in all the beaches, including Marina, Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur. Drones would be used for monitoring the crowd and tags would be tied around the hands of children to prevent them from getting lost.

5. TN Children Severely Malnourished: Report
Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) is high among children at 8 percent in Tamil Nadu, according to National Family Health Survey-4 (NFHS) data released in 2017.
Defined by a very low weight-for-height and by visible severe wasting, or by the presence of nutritional oedema (swelling of feet, for example), according to the World Health Organisation, SAM incidence in the State is higher than the national average.

6. Fishermen Object to Seaport
Fishermen have objected to a proposal to build a seaport situated between Kovalam in Kerala and Keelamanakudi in Kanniyakumari district of Tamil Nadu over fears it would cause irreparable damage to the environment.
In a petition to the Environment Directorate, representatives of various fishermen’s organisations said naturally-formed sand dunes, mangroves and salt pans would be lost if the port were to come up at the ecologically-sensitive spot.

7. Arasu Cable Ropes in Browsing Centres
Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation Ltd (TACTV), which runs 659 e-sevai centres across Tamil Nadu, has invited applications from private internet browsing centres to provide certain government services in urban centres on a franchisee model.
It would entail providing services that are currently being provided by TACTV through its e-sevai centres, such as issuing community certificate and nativity certificate, payment of various bills, printing of Aadhaar plastic card, payment of crop insurance and passport services, among others.
