Centre Extends Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar’s Tenure by One Year

The government on Monday also extended the tenure of Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das by three months.

Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, whose tenure was to end on 28 January, was given a one-year extension on Monday.

The nod for the extension of his tenure till 28 January, 2018 was given by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, official sources said.

A 1977-IFS batch officer, Jaishankar was appointed Foreign Secretary on 29 January, 2015 just few days before his retirement replacing Sujata Singh, whose term was abruptly curtailed by the government.

The government on Monday also extended the tenure of Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das by three months till 31 May.

A statement issued in the matter said:

The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal for extension in service in respect of Shaktikanta Das, IAS (TN: 1980), Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, for a period of three months w.e.f 1 March, 2017 to 31 May, 2017.

The Finance Ministry is scheduled to present the Budget for FY 2017-18 on 1 February, instead of the usual date of 28 February.

From this year, the government has decided to merge the Railway Budget with the General Budget.
