TN Police Booked by CBI For Firing During Anti-Sterlite Protests
CBI has booked unnamed police officials under various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday, 29 November, registered a case against Tamil Nadu Police over the deaths of protesters in police firing during anti-Sterlite protests in May, News18 reported.
The CBI had prima facie found the charges against the officials to be true, the central agency said, adding that it has booked them under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including those relating to public servants disobeying law with intent to cause injury.
If the charges are proven, the officials could be jailed for a maximum of 10 years, the report said.
The Madras High Court had in August directed the central agency to take over the probe in the case.
Thirteen people were killed in police action in May as the protests for the closure of Sterlite factory in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi turned violent.
