All patients have reportedly been safely evacuated from the block on fire. About 10 fire tenders have been rushed to the location to contain the fire, ANI reported.
As of now, about 250 people have been evacuated from the building, ABP Ananda reported.
The fire is said to have spread from a pharmacy of the building some time around 7.58 am.
While the hospital staff is reportedly working on transferring the evacuated patients elsewhere, some were seen lying on the ground with their saline tubes, after being rescued from the burning building, ABP Ananda reported.
About 57 patients, who were admitted under the cardiology department on the first floor of the building, were shifted to the emergency ward, sources told The Indian Express.
Oxygen cylinders, which were placed in a room next to the pharmacy department, where the fire broke out, were also shifted to another department, the report added.
Speaking to ANI, Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee said, “All the patients were moved from the area safely. There is thick smoke in the area, the situation will be soon brought under control.”
Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, founded in 1835, is one of the oldest hospitals in Kolkata. It is located on College Street, near Presidency University and Calcutta University.
