NHRC Issues Notice to UP DGP Over Police Action During Anti-CAA Protests in State
The NHRC has issued a notice to the police chief of Uttar Pradesh after receiving various complaints that allege "violation of human rights" in police action undertaken during the ongoing anti-CAA protests in the state, officials said on Wednesday, 25 December.
A complaint was received by the National Human Rights Commission recently, seeking its intervention in the alleged incidents of violation of human rights by the state police.
"Other complaints were also received in connection with the matter, which have been taken on record. The complaint was registered on December 23 and subsequently a notice was issued by the NHRC to the director general of police of Uttar Pradesh, seeking a report in four weeks," a senior official of the rights panel said.

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Tuesday urged the police to cease from using unnecessary lethal force against protestors of Citizenship (Amendment) Act in various parts of India.
The US-based human rights body's South Asia Director Meenakshi Ganguly, in a press release, said "The Indian authorities should cease using unnecessary lethal force against demonstrators protesting a law that discriminates against Muslims".
Indian police, in many areas, had been cracking down on anti-CAA protests with force, including unnecessary deadly force, she said.
4 Arrested for Allegedly Attempting to Disrupt Communal Harmony in UP's Kairana
Four people were arrested for allegedly attempting to disrupt communal harmony and violating Section 144 in Uttar Pradesh's Kairana on 20 December, according to ANI.
"They have claimed that they are workers of Popular Front of India /Social Democratic Party of India. Probe is on in the case,” Shamli SP Vineet Jaiswal said.
Anti-CAA Protests: Plea Moved in HC for Recovery of Damages to Properties
A plea was moved in Delhi High Court on Tuesday seeking directions to the authorities to recover damages for destruction of public and private property during anti-CAA protests from those responsible, according to PTI.
The matter was mentioned before a bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar by BJP leader Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay who urged the court to either take up the issue on its own or to permit him to file an application on the same.
The court while declining any urgent hearing on the issue raised by Upadhyay, said he was free to file an application which shall be listed in the normal course.

Muzaffarnagar DM Forms Special Cell to Probe Anti-CAA Violence
The Muzaffarnagar district administration has constituted a special investigation cell to probe cases of violence during the protests against the amended citizenship law here, police said on Monday. The cell will comprise 18 police personnel, including 13 inspectors. Superintendent of Police (Crime) R B Chaurasia said the special cell has started investigating 24 cases registered in connection with the violence on 20 December.
The cases are registered against 262 people of whom 48 have been arrested, he said.
Police personnel are deployed in adequate numbers to thwart any untoward incident, Chaurasia said.
Madras HC Directs MK Stalin's rally to be Videographed
The Madras High Court has directed videographing of DMK's proposed rally against the Citizenship Amendment Act on Monday if the party goes ahead with it despite denial of permission by the police.
It gave the interim direction late Sunday night on PILs opposing the rally after the Tamil Nadu government counsel informed that police have denied permission for the protest as there was no firm commitment from the organisers on owning responsibility in case of any violence and damage to property.
A bench of Justices S Vaidyanathan and PT Asha, however, declined to stop the rally, saying a peaceful demonstration cannot be prevented in a democratic country as it was the backbone of the democratic set up.

Indian-Americans Protest Against Citizenship Amendment Act in Washington
A large number of Indian-Americans gathered around the statue of Mahatma Gandhi installed in front of the Indian Embassy here and held a peaceful demonstration against the amended Citizenship Act and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC).
"We are here for only a single purpose. That purpose is civil rights and religious freedom and nothing more than that," Indian-American Mike Ghouse from the Washington-based non-governmental organisation Centre for Pluralism told the gathering, which included women, children and students.
Organised by American-Indian Muslims in association with over a dozen of similar bodies, peaceful protestors from in and around the Greater Washington Area on Sunday shouted slogans in favour of India's unity and displayed posters and banners alleging that the country was headed in a direction that was not secular in nature and violated the ethos of the Constitution.

Anti-CAA Protesters Allegedly Assaulted in Kolkata, Two Hospitalised
A group of around a dozen anti-CAA protesters, mostly women, were allegedly assaulted by 7 to 8 men in Kolkata's Bagha Jatin area around 10 pm on Sunday.
The protesters are currently at Jadavpur Police Station seeking to file FIRs in the matter. At least one of the alleged assailants are currently in custody of the Kolkata Police.
Two of the protesters have been hospitalised due to injuries sustained. One of them has received head injuries.

News agency ANI quoted Meerut District Magistrate as saying that Internet services have been restored in the district. However, all schools to remain closed tomorrow due to cold weather conditions.

879 People Arrested, 5,312 Taken Into Preventive Detention in UP: Police
The UP Police on Sunday said that 164 cases were registered, 879 people were arrested and 5,312 people taken into preventive detention in connection with incidents of violence across the state during anti-CAA protests. The police said that 288 of its personnel were also injured, including 61 who were injured by firearms.
Meanwhile, 76 cases were registered and 108 people arrested across UP in connection with objectionable/misleading posts on social media on the Citizenship law.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday made an unscheduled visit to Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh and met families of two persons, killed in recent violence over the amended citizenship law.
However, a four-member delegation of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), which was also scheduled to meet the families of those killed in UP during anti-CAA protests, was “detained” at Lucknow airport on Sunday afternoon, party sources cited by PTI claimed.
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Md Nadimul Haque, who is part of the delegation, said he and other party members were staging a sit-in near a hanger at the airport.
Meanwhile, the death toll in the violence that occurred during protests in UP's Meerut two days ago rose to five, a senior police official was quoted by PTI as saying on Sunday.
'CAA, NRC Not Going to be Implemented in Rajasthan': CM Ashok Gehlot
Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot asserted on Sunday that the CAA and NRC are not going to be implemented in Rajasthan.
“Modi ji, you should listen. Nine states have said it. Even your partners, Bihar CM and Odisha CM, who supported you in Parliament, are saying they won't implement NRC. You should understand public sentiment and announce neither NRC in its current form, nor CAA to be implemented,” he said.
Protests Against Citizenship Act Continue in TN
Around 500 members of Islamic outfits and scores of CPI(M) activists staged demonstrations in Chennai on Sunday as protests continued against the Citizenship Amendment Act in parts of Tamil Nadu.
While members of the Islamic outfits, including women, staged a protest holding placards in Chepauk, CPI(M) cadres distributed pamphlets in Thousand Lights area, PTI reported.
Protests also took place in the Besant Nagar area.

People from the Northeast gathered at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Sunday, claiming that the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act were given a Hindu-Muslim colour and the voices from the region fighting for the rights of indigenous people were ignored.

As many as 513 lawyers who are members of the National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS) alumni have, in a statement, underscored “the unconstitutionality of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, and the dangerous consequences it can have in conjunction with the NRC.”
The statement also called for “an investigation into the police brutalities across the country, especially in UP and Delhi.”
On 16 December, the student body of NUJS had also condemned “the violence and use of brute force against the protests organised by students of Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia”.
However, a few alumni members and some students had reportedly come out with a petition in support of CAA-NRC.

Jamia Submits Report to HRD Ministry, Requests Judicial Enquiry
The Jamia Millia Islamia has submitted a fresh report to the HRD Ministry requesting judicial inquiry into the entry of police on the university premises last Sunday. The varsity had earlier submitted reports in the matter on 15-16 December.
In the fresh report submitted to the ministry on 20 December, Jamia reiterated its request for initiation of an inquiry committee or a judicial inquiry to the incident. The Delhi Police detained four students during a protest against CAA outside Uttar Pradesh Bhawan in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri, officials said.

Clashes Erupt in UP's Rampur; Several People, Including Policemen, Injured
Clashes broke out between anti-CAA protesters and police, in which several people, including policemen, were injured in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur today, officials said.
Some 400-500 people gathered in Rampur to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act amid a ‘bandh’ call, they said.
Five protesters were hospitalised and District Magistrate Aunjaneya Singh says one is in critical condition.
“Over a dozen policemen also suffered minor injuries during stone-pelting by protesters that included children between the ages of 12 and 18 years,” Singh told PTI.
14-Day Judicial Custody to 11 People Arrested in Seemapuri Violence
