After holding day-long protest over the Citizenship Amendment Act at Delhi’s Jama Masjid, Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad was taken in police custody by the Delhi police in the wee hours of Saturday, 21 December.
As anti-CAA protests flared across the nation, violence erupted in Delhi’s Daryaganj on Friday evening where the police used water canons and lathis to disperse protesters who were allegedly pelted stones at the security personnel. A car was also set ablaze outside the Daryaganj police station, following which least 30-35 protesters, including minors were detained.
At least 15 demonstrators were also detained in Delhi's Seemapuri where incidents of stone-pelting by a group of protesters were reported, in which, an additional deputy commissioner of police reportedly sustained minor injuries.
Students and civilians protested outside the Delhi Police Headquarters on Friday night, demanding release of those detained.

Huge Jam At Delhi-Gurugram Border

Anti-CAA Protests: Delhi Police Arrests 12 More in Connection with Violence in Northeast Delhi
The Delhi Police made 12 fresh arrests in connection with the violence during protests in the northeast part of the city against the amended Citizenship Act, officials said on Thursday.
The police had arrested nine people on Tuesday and Wednesday in connection with the violence.
Giving details of the arrests, officials said while 12 people were nabbed in connection with the violence and vandalism in Seelampur, five have been held for the Jafrabad case and four in the Dayal Pur cases.
Angry protesters demanding scrapping of the amended legislation had pelted police personnel with stones, torched several motorbikes and vandalised two police booths as well as three buses in Seelampur on Tuesday, leaving 21 people injured.

Internet Restored in Parts of West Bengal
The West Bengal government gave its nod to resumption of internet services in Howrah district besides Baruipur and Canning subdivisions of South 24 Parganas district, a senior state government told PTI.
A review was conducted in those areas which found that the situation had improved there and internet services could be resumed, the official said.

16 Flights Delayed, 20 Indigo Flights Cancelled from Delhi
Sixteen flights have been delayed due to traffic jam at Delhi’s NH-8. IndiGo has cancelled 20 flights, after its crew members got stuck in traffic jam in the city and, also due to other issues.

CAA Worse Than Emergency: CPI(M)
Shutting down internet, closing down metro stations and clampdown on anti-CAA protests in the national capital is worse than what was during emergency, alleged Sitaram Yechury, General Secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist).
CPI General Secretary D Raja said that citizenship cannot be based on religion.
"BJP is working against the legacy of Sardar patel and citizenship cannot be based on religion...Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is undeclared subversion of the Constitution by Modi and Shah," he claimed.

20 Anti-CAA Held in Ahmedabad
Police baton-charged people who gathered in Sardar Baug area of Ahmedabad on Thursday to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the National Register of Citizens.
Nearly 200 people who had gathered in the area were dispersed to "maintain law and order" as they had not obtained permission to hold the protest, a police official said.
At least 20 protesters were also detained, he said.
"We had not given permission for this protest. We dispersed them to maintain law and order. We also detained some 20 people," inspector F M Nayab said.
Home Ministry to Review Security Situation in Kashmir
The Home Ministry will review the security situation in the country amid violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, officials said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, NSA Ajit Doval, MoS for Home G Kishan Reddy and Union Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla are expected to attend the meeting.
The prevailing situation of the country will be reviewed threadbare by the Home Ministry in the meeting, the officials said.

Jaishankar Shares India's Perspective on Citizenship Law
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is in the US, has shared India's perspective on the amended citizenship law with members of American Congress, the ministry said on Thursday.
Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar also asserted that outreach to foreign government on the contentious issue will continue.
He downplayed the decision of some Bangladesh ministers to defer their visits to India, saying much should not be read into rescheduling of these meetings.

HC Seeks Fresh Response from WB Govt on Law and Order Situation
The Calcutta High Court sought a fresh response from the West Bengal government on law and order situation in the state which is witnessing protests against the new citizenship law.
A division bench of Chief Justice TBN Radhakrishnan and Justice Arijit Banerjee directed the state government to submit its response on several PILs on Friday.
The PILs were filed over the breakdown of law and order and constitutional validity of the West Bengal government's campaign that the amended Citizenship Act will not be implemented in the state though the Supreme Court has refused to give a stay on it.
SP Workers Detained in Gorakhpur
Hundreds of protesters, including Samajwadi Party workers and leaders, were detained in Gorakhpur and other cities of eastern Uttar Pradesh during anti-citizenship law protests on Thursday after they defied prohibitory orders, police said.
In Gorakhpur, a large number of SP workers demonstrated at Laxmibai Park and many of them were shirtless. Police detained over 300 protesters, including former minister Rampal Nishad and former MLAs Mohsin Khan and Vijay Bahadur Yadav, from there and took them to police lines.
Police said they have detained dozens of Samajwadi Party workers in Kushinagar and Deoria.
The SP also demonstrated in Maharajganj, Basti, Siddharth Nagar and Kushinagar districts.
Citizenship Act Only Implementing Manmohan's Provisions from 2003: Jitendra Singh
Union minister Jitendra Singh said the new citizenship law seeks to implement exactly the suggestions given by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2003 in Parliament, who had advocated for granting Indian citizenship for persecuted minorities from neighbouring countries.
He also attacked the Congress party for changing its stand on issues depending on the votebank requirement or political expediency.
"Citizens Amendment Act (CAA) seeks to implement exactly the same suggestion which had been very effectively and logically put across by Dr Manmohan Singh in 2003 as the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha in support of laying down a liberal policy to offer citizenship to persecuted minorities from Bangladesh and other neighbouring countries," Singh told PTI.
Sadananda Gowda Blamed Congress, Left for Anti-CAA Protests
Union minister Sadananda Gowda blamed the Congress and Leftist elements for the protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and said that provocation by political parties was the sole trigger.
The Union minister for chemicals and fertilizers was talking to reporters on the sidelines of curtain-raiser function ahead of the Indian Pharma and Indian Medical Device Conference, to be held in Gandhinagar in March.
Gowda's junior colleague, Mansukh Mandaviya, who was also present, said Indian citizens should not fear the CAA.
2 Arrested in West Bengal for Hurling Bombs at Protesters
Two persons were arrested in connection with the incident of attack on a group of people protesting against the Citizenship Act in West Bengal's North Dinajpur district, police said.
The protesters were attacked at College Para area near National Highway-34 on Wednesday when they were returning after submitting a deputation at the district magistrate's office and six persons were injured when crude bombs were hurled at them.
RAF personnel were deployed at three places on Thursday - Bamongram, Bhagdumur and Purba College Para - under the jurisdiction of Raiganj police station, the police said.

1 Dead in Lucknow
One person succumbs to firearm injury amid violence over CAA in KGMU Trauma Centre in Lucknow.
"Mohammad Wakeel (25) died of firearm injury here," King George's Medical University (KGMU) Trauma Centre in-charge Sandeep Tiwari told PTI.
"Two other patients are undergoing treatment in the trauma centre and one of them has firearm injury," he said.
It is not yet clear from where the firing took place.
350 Taken into Custody Over CAA Protests in Telangana
Scores of protesters, including those of Left parties and students of University of Hyderabad, were taken into preventive custody in Hyderabad when they tried to hold protest rallies against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Police said there was no permission for any rally in support or against the CAA in Hyderabad though Left parties and various people's organisations held demonstrations in the state.
CPI national secretary K Narayana, party's Telangana state secretary Chada Venkat Reddy, Telangana Jana Samiti (TJS) chief M Kodandaram were among 350 people taken into preventive custody.
Cops Injured in Stone Pelting in Ahmedabad
A protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens in the Muslim-dominated Shah-E-Alam area of Ahmedabad turned violent on Thursday, with at least five policemen getting injured in stone-pelting.
The police lobbed teargas shells to disperse the mob of around 2,000 persons.
Protesters shouted slogans and held placards saying "No CAB No NRC". When the police tried to disperse them, the protesters started throwing stones and brick pieces.
AIIMS Students Doctors Defy Admin Order to Protest Against CAA
A section of students, resident doctors and faculty of AIIMS took out a candlelight march at the institute's premises, against the amended citizenship law and proposed nationwide NRC, despite a warning by the administration of disciplinary action against those holding any protest or strike within the complex.

Jamia VC Assures Medical Assistance to Injured Students
Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar interacted with the students injured during police crackdown at the campus and assured them that the university would bear their medical expenses.
Through a video call, she spoke to Ajaz, who is undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital, and interacted with Mohammed Minhajuddin, who lost sight in his left eye, in a lathicharge by police on Sunday.
According to an official of the university, Akhtar wanted to go and meet the injured students but could not do so due to closure of some stretches around Jamia Millia.
"She spoke to 10 students, who were injured on Sunday, and assured them that the university will bear all expenses of their treatment," the official said.
Situation Under Control in Lucknow, 55 Arrested: UP DGP
UP DGP OP Singh said that the situation in Lucknow is under control.
“Situation is normal in the city, some incidents occurred at places where protesters had declared they will gather. They pelted stones at us and set ablaze OB vans of media. We chased them and fired tear gas, situation has been controlled,” he said.
“55 people have been arrested in the city, we are scrutinizing CCTV footage. SSP Lucknow will take appropriate action, we will not spare anyone,” he added.

Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the RSS's student wing, and local BJP workers organised a march-cum-meeting in Pune in support of the amended Citizenship Act.
The march-meeting was organised on the campus of the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), which saw a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) earlier this week.
1,200 Detained in Delhi on Thursday
Around 1,200 protesters demanding scrapping of the amended citizenship act were detained on Thursday when they defied prohibitory orders imposed by the Delhi Police in Red Fort area.
According to an official, protesters were detained at Surajmal Stadium in Nangloi and Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Bawana.
Opposition leaders, including D Raja, Sitaram Yechury, Nilotpal Basu, Brinda Karat, Ajay Maken, and Sandeep Dikshit, and activists Yogendra Yadav and Umar Khalid, were among those detained near the Red Fort and Mandi House -- the sites of the two planned demonstrations.

Family Says Lucknow Man Died in CAA Protests, UP DGP Denies Claim
A man died of a firearm injury which he suffered while passing by a violent protest against the amended citizenship law in Lucknow, according to his family.
Uttar Pradesh Police chief O P Singh, however, said the death was not linked to the agitation or any police action.
"Mohammad Wakeel (25) died of firearm injury here," King George's Medical University (KGMU) Trauma Centre in-charge Sandeep Tiwari told PTI.
"Two other patients are undergoing treatment in the trauma centre and one of them has firearm injury," he said.
It was not immediately clear from where the firing took place.
The victim's brother, Taufiq, told reporters that "his brother was going home in Hussainabad as there was trouble and he was shot by a 'daroga' (police officer) from a police outpost." "Initially it was said he had pellet injuries. He was not involved in any agitation. We both are auto-rickshaw drivers and never indulged in any such act (agitation)," Taufiq added.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) appealed to people to peacefully protest against the amended Citizenship Act, saying violence will give a bad name to the whole movement and make it easier for the government to suppress the cause.

19 Cops Injured in Ahmedabad Violence
Nineteen police officials were injured and 32 protesters were detained in violence in Shah Alam area of Ahmedabad amid protests over CAA.

The website of Jamia Millia Islamia was hacked on Thursday and a message supporting the students in their protest against the amended citizenship law posted on it.
The message on the site read, "Hacked by Dark Knight to support Jamia students.. Jai Hind!"
The website of the university is handled by a third party and its server was hacked. The third party was informed and it is on the job to restore it, he said.

Will Continue Protests Till 'Black Law is Not Withdrawn: Bhim Army Chief
Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad, on Friday said that he will continue protesting till the government withdraws the 'black law'. He also said that the police lathi charged on the protesters after entering the Jama Masjid.
"Since afternoon, the protest has been going on peacefully. People from the administration had entered Jama Masjid and lathi-charged people in the day."
All Schools and Colleges to Remain Shut in UP
All schools, colleges and universities across Uttar Pradesh will remain shut on Saturday, state officials said. An order was issued to this effect on Friday night, a government spokesperson was quoted as saying in an official statement.
The government had earlier ordered closure of all schools on Thursday and Friday owing to severe cold wave condition. The order comes at a time when protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act have rocked several parts of the state, claiming at least six lives in violence and arson.
