Born Without Hands, Class X Girl Aces Exam By Writing With Feet

A 17-year-old physically disabled girl has defied all odds by scoring a First Division in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination under the Assam Board of Secondary Education (SEBA).

The girl, Jebin Kousar, was born without hands, reports News18. However, she did not allow disability to come in the way of her acing her exams, which she wrote with her feet!

Kousar, who is a student of Gyan Jyoti Academy, a private school in Assam’s Hojai district is one of the 16 students who appeared for the HSLC, out of which 11 others also secured a First Division, the results declared on Friday, 25 May.

The Principal of the school, Afsana Begum Choudhury told News18:

Our school has scored the First Division after 17 years. We are so proud of Jebin Kousar and the other students. We’ve never let her feel like she was different. 
The school has printed Kousar’s picture on the back of all the student identity cards, which show her appearing for the exam, holding the pen firmly with her feet.

They have shared her story as a source of inspiration to the school.

Kousar is the oldest of six daughters to Abdul Jabbar and Fateha Begum, who live in Murajhar, which is about a 180 kilometres from Guwahati.Her father is an auto-driver, while her mother stays at home.

Speaking about how the family had an income of Rs 5,000, Fateha Begum, Kousar’s mother told News18:

I am very happy for her. I raised my daughter with much difficulty. With one hand I used to cook and feed her with the other. She never took tuitions. In fact, her father was only expecting the Second Division. 

Kousar’s education will be sponsored by the Murajhar Guidance Junior Trust till Class 12.

She has decided to enrol in the Arts stream at Mariam Ajmal College in Hojai and wants to become a doctor, when she grows up.
