BJP MLA Ashok Singh Chandel and four others who were accused in the murder case of five people dating back to 1997, surrendered in court on Monday, 13 May, reported Indian Express.

The case occurred on 26 January 1997 when five people were shot dead in the Subhash market area in Hamirpur. The cause of the dispute was reportedly political rivalry.

The Allahabad High Court had issued an arrest warrant a week back after he was convicted.

The Hamirpur SP Hemraj Meena denied that they (Chandel and others accused) arrived in a fleet of vehicles which was accompanied by supporters who were shouting slogans.

“This is not true, it would have been a violation of Section 144. This was outside the court and it is not possible to discriminate among the supporters and common people who had come to the court for their work," said the SP, reports Indian Express.

Warrants were issued against Chandel and seven others – Uttam Singh, Sahabh Singh, Pradeep, Raghubeer Singh, Ashutosh Singh alias Dabbu, Naseem and Bhan Singh – on 6 May, stated a report by Indian Express.
