Bicycle Thief to Businessman: The Notorious Journey of Bindi Yadav
Bindi Yadav is in hot water for facilitating his son’s absconding in the Gaya road rage murder case.
Among the millions of rags to riches stories we hear everyday, sometimes we realise not every one of these has a happy ending.
One such life story is that of Bindeshwari “Bindi” Yadav. From being a petty criminal, he shot to infamy with his political clout and trigger-happy attitude and is now at the heart of controversy after his son allegedly murdered a 19-year-old school boy in Gaya.
Humble Beginnings
Back in the 80’s, Yadav was a small town thief, known for stealing a bicycle in Gaya, Bihar. But Neither the law nor his humble beginnings could hold him back from fulfilling his lofty ambitions.
The ‘90s saw a friendship blooming between Bindi and Bachchu, another goon. The gun-toting dynamic duo became infamous for creating a shadow of fear in the area.
Bindia-Bachua as they were ‘lovingly’ called, grew in their boldness, rising up to crimes as big as land grabbing.
With Lalu Prasad Yadav at the top of the Bihar Government, crime was given free reign in the area. Bindi-Bachchu soon caught up to the big names - Surendra Yadav, Rajendra Yadav and Maheshwar Yadav.
It did not take too long for Bindi to realise that he would require strong political support to survive. He soon joined Lalu Prasad’s entourage, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).
With the RJD’s backing, Bindi was the chairman of Gaya District Board from 2001 till 2006.
Failure to Launch
Despite being well connected, his attempts to get into State politics failed due to the number of criminal cases against him.
Nitish Kumar’s arrival on the scene in 2010 led to a switch in affiliation with Bindi pledging loyalties to Janata Dal-United. But the image-conscious chief minister was averse to backing a criminal.
After an arrest for weapons possession in 2011, the bicycle thief turned over a new leaf and used his political connections secure several government contracts that etched out a path of wealth for him.
Today, Bindi Yadav is the owner of a sprawling empire consisting of malls, hotels, 15 petrol pumps in Gaya, Bodh Gaya, Delhi and adjoining areas. He has business interests in sectors as diverse as road, construction and liquor. While he has similarly high figures in the number of criminal cases registered against him including kidnapping and murder.
Not so Happy Ending?
It is no surprise that his son ‘Rocky’ was driving an uber expensive SUV and whipped out a Italian pistol with which Aditya Sachdeva was allegedly killed. He even managed to get his wife Manorama Devi a cushy seat as a Member of Legislative Council, backed by JD-U.
But Bindi’s luck has run out. He was arrested for facilitating his son’s absconding while his wife was suspended. And his son has been at the centre of controversy for a case of road rage gone terribly wrong.
India watches with bated breath for the law to take its course on Bindi and his kin. Will justice be served for Aditya Sachdeva? And what about the hundreds of others who were victims of Bindi’s numerous crimes?
