1. Centre Rejects Request to Grant Religious Minority Tag to Lingayats

The Union government on Monday, 10 December, told the Karnataka High Court that it has rejected the recommendation of the state government to grant religious minority status to Lingayat and Veerashaiva community.

The Union government, in its November 23, 2018 letter written to the state government, has reiterated the earlier stand of the Centre that Lingayat/Veerashaiva community is part of Hindu religion.

A memo in this regard has been filed before a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and S. Sujatha during the hearing on the petitions, which had questioned the process initiated by the State to grant religious minority status to the community during December 2017.

2. AR Rahman to Perform Live in Bengaluru After Seven Years

Grammy and Oscar-winning musician, AR Rahman is going to perform in Bengaluru after seven years as part of his ‘One Heart Tour’ on 22 December at Ozone Urbana. The musician and composer will be accompanied by an artist line-up that includes Harshdeep Kaur, Udit Narayan, Haricharan, Ranjit Barot, Vijay Prakash, Shweta Mohan, Neeti Mohan and Jonita Gandhi.

Speaking of his concert tour, Rahman says, “It is exciting for me to be back in Bengaluru after so many years. The people here have always been so welcoming to me and I am excited to bring them this celebration of music.” The bestselling artist’s Bengaluru concert will feature a mix of old favourites as well as upcoming Hindi and Tamil tracks.

3. Siddaramaiah’s Foreign Trip Amid Political Action Worries Congress

Coalition coordination committee chairman Siddaramaiah’s plans to head to Malaysia ahead of the winter session of the state legislature and that too at a time when the dissidents are planning to use strong tactics to clinch ministerial berths has become a cause for worry for the state Congress leadership.

Siddaramaiah is leaving for Malaysia to attend the wedding of one of his family friends and will return to Bengaluru on Friday, 14 December. His absence at the legislature session will be felt. The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting, which was scheduled to be held in Belagavi on 10 December just before the start of the session, has been deferred to December 18.

Siddaramaiah had invited Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy for the CLP meeting to redress the grievances of Congress MLAs to ensure a smooth show at the session and counter opposition BJP effectively. Now, we are heading to the session without getting our grievances redressed by the CM and we will miss Siddaramaiah in keeping our flock together,” a senior Congress leader, who is also a ministerial aspirant, said.

4. HAL's Light Utility Helicopter Achieves Important Milestone

Light Utility Helicopter 

The Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) has achieved an important milestone of flying at 6 km altitude in Bengaluru, recently. The flight was carried out under the envelope expansion tests and flying at 6 km altitude is a critical requirement towards the certification of LUH.

The helicopter exhibited satisfactory performance and handling qualities. With the completion of this milestone, LUH can now undertake high altitude cold weather trials planned in January 2019.

The chopper was flown by Chief Test Pilot Wg. Cdr. (Retd) Unni K Pillai and Test Pilot, Wing Cdr (Retd) Anil Bhambhani.

5. Scheduled Power Cuts in Several Parts of the City

Power cuts will be reported in several parts of the city 

On Tuesday, 11 December, the Central Business District will be affected with no power supply between 10am to 3pm.

Areas that will be affected include MG Road, Murphy Town, Bazaar Street, Gangadhar Chetty Road, Brigade Road, Church Street, Rest House Road, Residency Road, Museum Road, St Mark’s Road, Hayes Road, Convent Road, Cresent Road, Kasturba Road, Brunton Road, Prime Rose Road, Cariappa Memorial Park and Manekshaw Parade Ground,

Other areas affected by power cuts are Halasuru Road, Dickenson Road, Walton Road, Lavelle Road, Vital Mallya Road, Trinity Circle, Commissariat Road, Plain Street, Infantry Road, Kamaraj Road, Commercial Street, Dispensary Road, NP Street, Ibrahim Sahib Street, VP Street, Sangam Road, Armstrong Road, Jewellers Street, Kodandarama Layout, Dharmaraj Koil Street, Lady Curzon Road, Union Street and Cubbon Road.
